6、but also a realistic one. sometimes, without money, the refreshing time of love will be very short. its just like the grate gatsby and daisy .when gatsby was a junior officer, daisy fell love with him at her first sight, and decided to run away with him . unfortunately ,after persuasion of her famil

7、y ,she broke off with gatsby. we all know , gatsby was born in a poor family, with no money, no status in the society. when gatsby became a millionaire ,she fell in love with gatsby at once, but ,when she feel unsafe about the status ,she part away with gatsby immediately. when gatsby died, she and

8、tom were on a honey journey. what a tragedy! i mean the daisy. such a selfish, philistine woman. she doesnt reserved a love. i feel deeply sympathy with gatsby, because he treated daisy as a lifelong pursuit. however ,until he was dead ,he hasnt known his failure. through all of such a disillusioned

12、y describes gatsbys luxurious passion for daisy buchanan, which is the symbol of his american dream. unfortunately, gatsbys american dream is broken quickly when he is dead and daisy, does not feel any sadness but only happiness, leaves for another city with his husband. there is something separates

13、 them from each other, and it is wealth and social status. in the novel, the character gatsby is overwhelmed by only one thing that he does not possess, that is to be loved. gatsbys love for daisy is real and strong, and he can do everything to win daisy. the great gatsby is a realistic demonstratio

14、n of the ruin of the american dream, because gatsbys american dream is to have more money than tomdaisys husband who is so rich that he can do everything he likes and he can also offer daisy a better life, and finally wins daisys love. the reason that gatsby can not make his american dream come true

15、 is not because that he doesnt do his best, but the american dream he pursues is the love of daisy, who is born in fortunate family, living in a wealth life all the time. however , gatsby comes from an unfortunate farm family in north dakota, and it is not easy for him to live a higher standard life

18、 the greatest novelists in the american literature of the 1920s,20th century. he is the representatives of the lost generation writers and the jazz age , he is a poet laureat also. after his publication of the grate gatsby in 1925 ,it got a an immediately response from the entire society. the novel

19、is not only the theatrical performance in that american society, is also a dramatic manifestation of american culture itself. f sott fitzgerald depicts all mortal beings in the jazz time , through a kind of description , full of rich imagination and romantic feelings. 1.2 the background of thethe gr

20、ate gatsby the jazz age refers to the end of the first world war to the great depression.f scott fitzgerald set the grate gatsby in the time, in peoples mind, they thought that money took gods place, the whole traditional order was collapsed, and fitzgerald once summarized peoples characters at that

21、 time as “all gods have died, all the wars have been over, and all the faiths have faded away.”(fitzgerald, 1991: 253) generally , the youthful generation feel confused ,and disappointed about the american dream. the american dream has a long history. it can be dated back to the time of the puritan

22、migrants dreams. they are pursuing for the freedom of religious belief , and against for the political oppression . as time goes by ,its meaning become different. in the nineteenth century, the american dream based on the assumption of each person, no matter what his origin was, could succeed in cha

23、nging their social positions and making their dreams come true through their own efforts, and getting new, free and better life. this is what often called american dream .american dream is a popular belief that hard work will bring forth americas bounty in the form of material well-being, a counter

24、culture that rejects traditional thinking while promoting their own causes, information explosion, reverse discrimination-in the workplace because so many employers are hiring women and minorities. its the idea that the american way of life offers the equal possibility of unlimited economic, social,

25、 etc. one can always work their way up from the rags to riches just like abraham lincoln, 16th president of the us. in brief, the main content of american culture was emphasis on individuals value, optimistic, pursuing of democracy and freedom, the promotion of deportation and competition and the ne

26、ed of realism and practicality. however, in different historical backgrounds, the meanings of american dream are also different from each other. in colonial period, american dream was the crying for wealth; and in the later 18th century, peoples american dream was to fight for democracy; americans h

27、ad a great fantasy for expansion in the civil war period; in the first world war, the american dream is to pursue luxuriant life, and in the 2nd world war, the american dream is to achieve higher standard of life.the world war i cast the young men into an age of alienation and dissentient. they ente

28、red the war with naive and blind patriotism and under the slogan of world peace and democracy. returning from the war, these idealized intellectuals felt separated by their war experience from conventional ideals and values of their homes. the economic bloom has deception affluence on the promising

29、young men, not only destroyed their lives, but also destroyed their early innocent believes. many excellent young men found its difficult to adapt to the after-war overflow of materialism. scientific advances caused increase in industry, which brought vast changes to the character of american societ

30、y. millions of americans were no longer content to follow former patterns and there was a rebellion against the falseness of society as represented by victorian generation. to many people, world war i was a tragic failure of old values, of old politics, of old ideas. the social mood was often one of

31、 confusion and despair. yet, americans entered a decade of proprietary and exhibitionism that prohibit the legal ban against alcoholic beverages, did more to encourage than to curb. fashions were extravagant; more and more automobiles crowed the roads, advertising flourished; and nearly every americ

32、an home had a radio in it. roads swept the nation, people danced the charleston, and they sat upon the flagpoles. the only thing for the youth who lived in that period to pursue was material wealth, and luxuriant life.in order to show off the wealth, many people in upper class also held big parties

33、in weekends. in those parties, there were every kind of people who were also famous or rich, and such kind of party were so extravagant that the reason people took part in it was to know more rich people and indulged them in luxuriant life. they were looking forward to having more money and then liv

34、ed a better life, which was much more extravagant. in such a special period, there was a fact that the person who had more money and lived a more extravagant life would be respected much more and have more friends. on the other hand, the person, who neither had money nor fame, would be looked down u

35、pon by others, not mention to live a better life or have a true love from another. whatever their american dream was, the only way and first thing they should do was to earn enough money. without money, there was no achievement, including love.self-made and self-invented millionaire jay gatsby who l

36、ived in the period of the first world war embodies some of fitzgeralds, and his countries, most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed and the promise of new beginnings. at that time, almost every one of the youth had an american dream for themselves. and all the people including immigration and

37、 poor people had a desire and regard for a perfect life. such a perfect life should be full of big house, much money, delicious food, cost cars, as well as freedom. everyone had a different idea for his or her american dream; everyones american dream may be totally different from each other; that is

38、 what makes them all individuals. the dream may differ in that some people wanted to work hard and had financial success, or others might just want to have enough food and income to survive, and made their life simple, healthy and happy.(邓年刚,潭素钦, 1997, 1: 1)however, there was a common truth that eve

39、ryone who lived in that period actually had an american dream and eager to achieve it and everyone has an american dream which is to have a good opportunity to realize personal dream.chapter 2an analysis on the gatsbys dream2.1 an analysis on the gatsbydifferent from other people in jazz age, gatsby

40、 was a pure romantic gentleman. “gatsby bought that mansion so that daisy would bi just across the bay.” (fitzgerald, 2002: 93) although daisy once returned to his body, he could not satisfy it. what he wanted to get was not that he endowed with great charm, but that he wanted nothing less of daisy

41、than that she should go to tom and say: “i never love you. after she had obliterated four years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to go back to louisville and be married from her house just as if it were five years ago.” (fitzgerald, 2002: 130) however, the essenc

42、e of daisy decided that the dream of gatsbys pure love was inevitably disillusioned.gatsby owned marvelous genius, incomparable resolute romantic volition to his dream as well as his loyalty to his ideal, which won high praise of the author. when he lies on bed, all kinds of whimsical fantasy come t

43、o his dreams, a gorgeous universe occurred in his mind. every night he will embellish his fantasy patterns with a beautiful story. therefore, he cant tell difference between reality and dreams. in his eyes, daisy, is the goddess, with charming voice, elegant behavior, who is the best dream for gatsb

44、y .daisy represented all beautiful creatures of the upper class society in america, and in his memory, the first love between daisy and him seemed to be a human fairyland, whereas, the cruel reality was that he lacked rich family supporting him and his love. the great disparity of their status made

45、him sense that he had no right to touch her hand. “gatsby was overwhelmingly aware of the youth and mystery that wealth impressions and preserves, of the freshness of many clothes, and of daisy, gleaming like silver, safe and proud above hot struggles of the poor.” (fitzgerald, 2002: 98) but he was

46、wrong , he didnt realize that, daisy isnt perfect like the model in his dream actually. he extend his dream, his dream is full of active passion .gatsby is great man. in that money worship society, people are long for the extravagant life, but with little morality. though, he do some illegal busines

47、s ,he shows up a insistent spirit on pursuing his dream ,and he takes responsibility bravely, such a virtue, there is no one who can compare with him. f. fitzgerald had said, gatsby is different from anyone else. there is something gorgeous on him. he is highly sensitive about the hope of life . thi

48、s sensitivity is a weird gift for the hope. every night , he stayed for the green light from the opposite dock, ignoring the noise and flashy society. what a spoony man! at the end of the novel, he chose to replace the crime of daisy. this sharp distinct difference between gatsby and the toms makes

49、a high virtue man. nickle said, i couldnt forgive him or like him but i saw that he had done was , to him , entirely justified. it was all very careless and confused. they were careless people, tom and daisythey smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast c

50、arelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made at last, the writer shouted at gatsby, they are a group of balckguards. all of them cannot keep up with you. we can see, the writer shows up a deeply sympathy on the gatsby.2.2 an analysis ab

51、out the gatsbys dissilussioned dreamafter the first war, the most americans need to make their dreams realized through money. so does the gatsbys american dream. his first lover daisy ,who would choose the tom rather than the love, for the only reason that gatsby is a poor man. as a result, he despe

52、rately earned much more money, and fantasized about recapturing his beloveddaisy with money when he was rich enough, afterwards, he really made a fortune. “once i wrote down on the empty space of a timetable the names of those who came to gatsbys house that summer, including film stars, boarders, du

53、ke, prince, etc. (fitzgerald, 2002: 13)” , while the narrator nickels finn servant informed me that gatsby dismissed every servant in his house a week ago and replaced them with half a dozen others. gatsby became very rich beyond peoples imagination, nearly owned magical power, could gather all rich

54、 men and dismiss servants and employ any one, and even made west egg become a constant magnificent feast. surely, what have been finished was not to depend on the traditional teaching but illegal deals in gangdom or underworld, however, luxurious life could not bring gatsby a little happiness, since

55、 in essence, he was different from those who sought for benefits and fames. in jazz age, wealth was not the most significant to gatsby, while what he only recalled was to repeat the past with daisy day and night and to get the lost pure love. after he got rich, he bought a luxurious mansion in front

56、 of daisys house across the bay. “if it wasnt for the mist we could see your house across the bay,” said gatsby, you always have a green light that burns all nights at the end of your dock.” (fitzgerald, 2002: 110) almost five years, gatsby never stopped recalling his first lover daisy. “he had thro

57、wn himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. no amount of fine or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.” (fitzgerald, 2002: 113) whats more, the writer has used a series of symbo

58、lism ,which connects the present, the past, and the future. the hero gatsby was just wandering in the past and future ,the dream and realism, suffering the tragedy in life. this story happened at two unusual formations of land, which was named the east egg and the west egg. they are dissimilar in every particular except
