His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his gener

2、ation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. After 1935 Lin lived mainly in the United States, where he became known as a “wise and witty” popularizer of Chinese philosophy and way of life. Lins best sellers were My Country and My P

3、eople (simplified Chinese: 吾国与吾民) (1935) and The Importance of Living(simplified Chinese: 生活的艺术) (1937), written in English in a charming style. Anyone who is abstruse and unintelligible is called a philosopher. Anyone who is unconcerned with the present is also called a philosopher. And yet there is some

12、truth in the latter meaning. The only problem unconsciously assumed by all Chinese philosophers to be of any importance is: how shall we enjoy life, and who can best enjoy life? No perfectionism(不去追求完美的理想), no straining after the unattainable(不去寻找那势不可得的事物), no postulating of the unknowable(不去穷究那些不可得

13、知的东西); but taking poor, mortal human nature as it is, how shall we organize our life that we can work peacefully, endure nobly(旷达地忍耐) and live happily? I. Find Thyself: I. 22、 the inner warmth in ourselves. For it seems that while a man with passion and sentiment may do many foolish and precipitate(鲁莽的) things, but a man without passion or sentiment is a joke and a caricature(一副讽刺画). So this warm generosity of soul has to be protected against life by a philosophy, becaus

23、e life is harsh, warmth of soul is not enough, and passion must be joined to wisdom and courage. To me wisdom and courage are the same thing, for courage is born of an understanding of life; he who completely understands life is always brave. Anyway that type of wisdom which does not give us courage

24、 is not worth having at all. Wisdom leads to courage by exercising a veto against our foolish ambitions and emancipating (从解放出来) us from the fashionable humbug(骗子) of this world, whether humbug of thought or humbug of life. 13讲解:XX2021/3/10 III. Such teachings include the wisdom of the foolish, the advantage of camouflage(隐逸者

26、的 长处), the strength of weakness, and. the simplicity of the truly sophisticated The greatest wisdom seems like stupidity. The greatest eloquence like stuttering(口吃, 结巴). Movement overcomes cold, But staying overcomes heat. So he by his limpid calm Puts everything right under heaven. (清净为天下正) 15讲解:XX
