4、 Design management refers to an approach whereby organizations make design-relevant decisions in a market and customer-oriented way as well as optimizing design- relevant processes. Design management acts in the interface of management and design and functions as a link between the platforms of tech

5、nology, design, design thinking, management and marketing at internal and external interfaces of the enterprise. 2. Niche market A niche market is a focused targetable portion (subset) of a market. By definition, then, a business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or s

6、ervice that is not being addressed by mainstream providers. A niche market may be thought of as a narrowly defined group of potential customers. Reading A Task 1“He who fails to plan plans to fail.” What could this proverb mean when applied to the design industry? Design planning is a term coined to

7、 collectively identify those aspects devoted to the strategic, conceptual and methodological concerns of design. As would be expected, design planning is more concerned with the initial activities in a design project: establishing purpose and fundamental directions; exploring what ends the project s

8、hould address; developing a concept, or plan, that can guide the project through a detailed design activity; and assembling, customizing and/or creating the process, methods and tools to conduct the project. Reading A Design Planning In distinction to other forms of planning, design planning is inti

9、mately concerned with the nature of the product, system, service, institution, etc. being planned. A key outcome of the design planning process will be a conceptual description of what is to be produced. Supporting that may be a financial plan for how to fund development and how to price components

10、and associated services; an implementation plan for how to stage development and when to introduce offerings to the market; a marketing plan for how to target niche markets and how to communicate product values; and other plans as appropriate. Reading A Every planning starts with setting up clear go

11、als of what needs to be achieved and the specific results that should be produced. After that the design approach should be defined. Then the activities have to be identified and scheduled. The real challenge lies in maintaining and managing planning throughout the process of completing the activiti

12、es. The design planner may be involved in developing any or all of them, but his or her primary responsibility is the development of the conceptual plan, without which little else can be done. 13、n the task is complex and too large to get the overview in advance. Good planning can be difficult and complex, but investing time surely pays off when a project is completed.
