26、- Para 29 Remember the names of the festivals Dragon Boat Festival Dragon Boat Festival 5th day of the 5th lunar month The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival
27、has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice (糯米)wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats. The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regatta (赛舟会)commemorates the d

29、d leaves mosquito net Hungry Ghost Festival(中元节) The 14th and 15th of the seventh lunar month Much like Western cultures Halloween, some Eastern cultures celebrate a Fall festival where they believe the gates of hell are thrown open, releasing hungry ghosts to wander the earth in search of food and
30、taking revenge upon those who wronged them in life. This month-long festival is known as the Hungry Ghost Festival and takes place during the 7th lunar month. Unlike other celebrations of the dead in Eastern cultures that seek to honor dead ancestors, the Hungry Ghost Festival seeks to pacify the hu
31、ngry ghosts, the ghosts of strangers and the un-cared-for dead. These are the ghosts of those who died by their own hands, by accidents, by drowning or hanging who have been denied entry into heaven. On the 14th, a great feast would be held to honor family ancestors. Prayers and offerings would be m
32、ade at family altars. On the following night, the 15th, they would feast for the hungry ghosts. Held outside under the full moon, these feasts feed the evil spirits so that they will leave the living alone and bribe(贿赂) the ancestors for luck with money and the harvest. Mid-Autumn Festival The 15th
33、day of the 8th lunar month The joyous Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth moon, around the time of the autumn equinox(秋分). Many referred to it simply as the Fifteenth of the Eighth Moon. The Bun Festival in Cheung Chau 长洲包山节长洲包山节 Entertaining Gods, Spirits and Men T
34、he annual Taiping Qingjiao (Peaceful Taoist Sacrificial Ceremony) better known as the Bun Festival in English, is a thrilling carnival for the islanders. Each year, the peaceful fishing village is converted into a place bursting with joy and excitement: the bay is packed with fishing boats and yacht
35、s from near and afar; the streets are decorated with colorful flags; tens of thousands of tourists from Hong Kong and overseas pour into the area, bringing liveliness to the island. The Bun Festival During the festival, there is a tradition that the residents stop slaughtering and give up meat for t
36、hree days. Most of the restaurants on the island serve only vegetarian foods in this period of fasting. Respecting the local customs, foreigners living there generally follow suit. follow suit :do what someone else is doing The Tradition of Ching Ming Festival A Chinese holiday, celbrated on April 5
37、th, is the Ching Ming Festival (aka Qingming Festival.) Ching, in Chinese, means pure or clean and Ming means brightness. Most people call this holiday grave- sweeping day because people head to the cemetery to clean graves. There are many Ching Ming rituals仪式 which include pulling out weeds around
38、the headstone, cleaning the stone and replacing wilted or dead flowers with fresh ones. People also burn incense薰香 and paper money. The paper money is for the deceased to use in the afterlife. Youll even see food arranged on headstones but its not a picnic. The food is an offering to the spirits. Th
39、ree sets of chopsticks筷子 and three Chinese wine cups are also placed above the food, close to the headstone. Other rituals include family members pouring wine on the grave or setting off firecrackers鞭炮 to scare away evil spirits. The firecrackers also let deceased loved ones know theyre there to pay
40、 their respects. Its considered bad luck to do important business or have an operation on April 5th.
