、MechanicalMechanical armarm systemsystem forfor openingopening a a doordoor BACKGROUNDBACKGROUND OFOF THETHE INVENTIONINVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to automatic door openers and other systems for opening or closing a door. More particularly, the present invention
、relates to a mechanical arm system for opening a door, especially a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) door, in which no component of the mechanical arm system is mounted on, or makes permanent contact with, the door. 2. Background Art Automatic door openers, for many different appl
、ications, are well known in the art. Automatic door openers may be equipped on doors of public facilities to allow passage through the doorway of people without their manual operation. Automatic door openers may incorporate hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical devices. For example, a conventi
、onal automatic door opener for opening or closing a door includes an a control unit, an actuator driving a drive shaft and an articulated opener arm extending between the drive shaft and the door. An end of the opener arm is either permanently mounted on one of the door or the door frame, with the a
、ctuator and drive shaft combination mounted on the other of the door frame or the door. The opener arm responds to movement of the drive shaft to extend or contract so as to move the door to an open or closed position, respectively. The control unit may include adjustable timers and sensors to contr
、ol the movement of the door, and to identify when an obstacle is encountered in the doors pathway. Typically, the door opener must complete its opening process of placing the door in the open position before closure of the door can be initiated. Consequently, such a conventional door opener is unacc
、eptable for use with a SCIF door. The requirements for an SCIF door are dictated by the U.S. government, and two of these requirements provide that, except for the lock, key bypass, a door closer, and crash-put bar, nothing additional can be installed which makes permanent contact with the door and
、that the door must be able to return to its closed state, quickly, at any point in its forward opening cycle. What is needed, therefore, is a mechanism for automatically opening a door, in which none of the mechanisms components are mounted on the door itself, and further allows for closure of the d
、oor from any position during the door opening process. The present invention satisfies these and other needs, as will be made apparent by the description of the present invention that follows. BRIEFBRIEF SUMMARYSUMMARY OFOF THETHE INVENTIONINVENTION A mechanical arm system for opening a door is pres
、ented. In one embodiment, the system includes an actuator assembly having an output shaft and an arm driven by the output shaft for moving the door from a closed position to an open position. The actuator assembly is mounted to a support member adjacent the door, and the arm selectively contacts the
、 door to move the door toward the open position. The arm is moveable between a position in which the arm contacts the door in the open position and a retracted position in which the arm is free from contact with the door in the closed position. The door may be manually opened as well. The actuator a
、ssembly may be supported on a wall above the door. In one embodiment, the arm pivots in a first direction for contacting the door and a second direction for retracting from contact with the door, the arm pivoting with rotation of the output shaft. The actuator assembly may include a hydraulic rack a
、nd pinion rotary actuator having a piston that drives a rack which meshes with a pinion, and the output shaft is coaxial with the pinion and rotates with rotation of the pinion. The mechanical arm system may include a controller unit, which activates and deactivates the hydraulic actuator and contro
、ls a rotational direction of the output shaft so as to pivot the arm in the first direction or the second direction. The system may further include a hydraulic pump for supplying fluid to the hydraulic actuator, and the controller unit controls start and stop of the hydraulic pump so as activate and
、 deactivate the hydraulic actuator, and controls the direction of fluid displacement by the pump so as to control the rotational direction of the output shaft. An open switch may be included for initiating movement of the door toward the open position under force of the arm. When the open switch has
、 been activated, the controller unit controls the rotational direction of the output shaft so as to pivot the arm in the first direction, whereby the arm contacts the door and moves the door toward the open position. A stop switch may be included for aborting movement of the door toward the open pos
、ition under force of the arm. A pressure overload sensor may be included for sensing when the hydraulic pressure of fluid supplied to the hydraulic actuator rises above a pre-set limit. When the pre-set pressure limit has been exceeded, the controller unit controls the rotational direction of the ou
、tput shaft so as to so as to move the arm to the retracted position. The system may further include a relay sensor that senses when the door has reached the open position under force of the arm, wherein when the open position has been sensed, the controller unit deactivates the hydraulic actuator, t
、he arm remaining in contact with the door and holding the door in the open position until the arm has been moved to the retracted position. In one embodiment, a timer in electronic communication with the controller unit determines the amount of time the door is held in the open position by the arm,
、and when a predetermined amount of time has passed, the controller unit activates the actuator and controls the rotational direction of the output shaft so as to move the arm to the retracted position In another embodiment of the mechanical arm system, the arm extends between the output shaft and th
、e door, and the arm contacts the door only when the door is being moved from a closed position toward an open position and when the arm temporarily holds the door in the open position. The controller unit controls the actuator assembly so as to alternatively rotate the output shaft in a first direct
、ion and a second direction opposite the first direction. When the controller unit activates the actuator assembly to initiate a door opening process, the output shaft is rotated in a first direction to move the arm against the door so as to force the door toward the open position. The system may inc
、lude a stop switch. The opening process is aborted when the stop switch is activated, with the controller unit activating the actuator assembly so that the output shaft rotates in the second direction and moves the arm away from contact with the door. The door is then free to close under its own pow
、er. DETAILEDDETAILED DESCRIPTIONDESCRIPTION OFOF THETHE INVENTIONINVENTION FIGS. 1-12 illustrate a m
、echanical arm system, and/or components thereof, for automatic opening of a door, in accordance with an embodiment presented herein. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the mechanical arm system of this embodiment is located in an environment interior of a door 1010, which is a left-hinged door that opens ou
、tward in a direction of arrow O. The mechanical arm system includes an actuator 4040 (shown in FIGS. 3 and 4), an arm 3030 having an elongated pivot member 3636 and a tread wheel 2121, a pump 8080 (housed in a housing 1717, as shown in FIG. 11) for supplying hydraulic fluid to actuator 4040, and a c
、ontroller unit 7878 (schematically shown in FIG. 12) which may be housed in a control box 2525. An open switch 7474 is provided adjacent a door jamb of door 1010, on both the interior side and exterior side (not shown) of door 1010. When open switch 7474 is activated by a user, switch 7474 signals c
、ontroller unit 7878 to operate arm 3030 so as to force door 1010 open. The mechanical arm system may further include an emergency stop switch 7272 also provided adjacent a door jamb of door 1010, on both the interior side and exterior side (not shown) of door 1010. When emergency stop switch 7272 is
、 activated by a user, if door 1010 is in the process of being opened or is then fully opened by arm 3030, arm 3030 is immediately retracted away from contact with door 1010 to permit door 1010 to return to the illustrated closed position. A pair of conduits 2626a and 2626b fluidly connect pump 8080
、with actuator 4040. Conduits 2626a and 2626b are secured along a wall 5656 by one or more routing mounts 2424, and their end portions that are joined to actuator 4040 are further supported by a bracket 1414 secured to an actuator shroud 1818 that surrounds actuator 4040. Conduits 2626a and 2626b may
、 be pipes or hoses of suitable internal diameter to achieve the hydraulic pressure needed for actuator 4040 to operate so as to force door 1010 open, as would be apparent to one of skill in the art. When pump 8080 is operated in one direction of fluid displacement, actuator 4040 drives arm 3030 agai
、nst door 1010, forcing door 1010 toward an open position. In this instance, conduit 2626a may operate as a supply line to supply pressurized hydraulic fluid from pump 8080 to actuator 4040, and conduit 2626b operates as a return line to return hydraulic fluid to pump 8080. When pump 8080 is operated
、 to reverse the direction of fluid displacement, conduit 2626b then operates as the supply line to actuator 4040, and actuator 4040 is then operated to drive arm 3030 away from contact with door 1010 so as to permit door 1010 to return to the closed position. More detail with regard to the operation
、al process of the mechanical arm system is described below with reference to FIG. 13. As noted above, door 1010 is a left-hinged door, hinged at 5151 along a left side 6464 of door 1010 when viewed from the doors interior. Door 1010 opens at its right side 6262 so as to open outward in the direction
、 of arrow O. In this embodiment, door 1010 is a sound control door equipped with a balanced magnetic contact switch 5858 for detecting opening of the door. Switch 5858 has components mounted on a lintel 5454 of a door frame 5252 and on the upper right corner 6060 of door 1010. Further, door 1010 may
、 have magnetic seals (not shown) around door 1010, such as at the door jambs and door head, to ensure door 1010 is secured in the illustrated closed position unless and until the seals are broken by enough force to overcome the magnetic force. In one embodiment, door 1010 is constructed as a SCIF do
、or, such that the environment interior of the door is a controlled space of a SCIF. In this instance, a key card entry device may be linked to open switch 7474 so that a key card is required to activate open switch 7474. An actuator assembly 7070 is secured to a surface adjacent door 1010. In one em
、bodiment, actuator assembly includes actuator 4040, along with an actuator shim 1111 and an actuator bracket 3232, which hold actuator 4040 in place adjacent door 1010. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, actuator shim 1111 is joined to a top surface of a housing 4343 of actuator 4040. FIG. 10 shows a perspe
、ctive view of actuator bracket 3232. Actuator bracket 3232 includes bracket 3838 having horizontally extending portion 3838a and vertically extending portion 3838b. Left and right gussets 3939 welded between portions 3838a and 3838b on the left and right sides of bracket 3838, respectively, reinforc
、e bracket 3838. Actuator shim 1111 includes four threaded mounting holes 1111a for mounting actuator 4040 to actuator bracket 3232. These mounting holes 1111a correspond with four mounting holes 3131a of horizontally extending portion 3838a of bracket 3838, and the mounting holes on the bracket 3838
、 and shim 1111 receive rivets, screws, or the like so as to secure actuator 4040 to bracket 3232. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, actuator assembly 7070 is mounted to a support member above door 1010. The support member may include either door lintel 5454 itself and/or the portion of wall 5656 ab
、ove door lintel 5454. In this embodiment, actuator bracket 3232 is secured to a wall mounting plate 3737 mounted on wall 5656 above lintel 5454 of door frame 5252. Lintel 5454 is reinforced by a door frame brace 5757, which is also secured to wall mounting plate 3737. As shown in FIG. 9, providing a
、 perspective view of door frame brace 5757, an opening 5757a is formed in door frame brace 5757. Vertically extending portion 3838b of bracket 3838 is positioned at opening 5757a so that vertically extending portion 3838b may then directly abut wall mounting plate 3737 and be secured thereto by rive
、ts, screws, or the like received in holes 3131b of vertically extending portion 3838b. FIGS. 3 and 4 show a side perspective view and a top view, respectively, of actuator 4040 and arm 3030 of the mechanical arm system. Actuator includes an output shaft 2222 for driving arm 3030 to force door 1010 t
、oward an open position (not shown), to allow entry into the environment (e.g., SCIF) interior of door 1010. As shown in FIG. 6, elongated pivot member 3636 of arm 3030 has a proximal end portion 6666 having a hole H1 for receiving shaft 2222 and a distal end portion 6868 that supports tread wheel 21
、21. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, tread wheel 2121 is rotatably mounted on distal end portion 6868 by a shoulder screw 2323 or the like. Wheel 2121 may be made of any durable material, such as polyurethane, that includes a non-slip surface and is able to withstand transfer of force from arm 3030 to doo
、r 1010 during the door opening process. Output shaft is keyed with a keyway 2727 that engages with a indention 9898 of hole H1 so that pivot member 3636 is effectively spline-fitted on output shaft 2222 and rotates with rotation of output shaft 2222. Proximal end portion 6666 of pivot member 3636 ha
、ving an elongated gap 9494, extending from the end to hole H1, is pinched together by a bolt 1919 so as to compress the peripheral surface of hole H1 firmly about shaft 2222, further securing pivot member 3636 to output shaft 2222. As shown in FIG. 4, arm 3030 pivots in a first direction T (indicate
、d by arrow T) and in a second, opposite direction A (indicated by arrow A). As will be further described below, in the first direction T, arm 3030 is moved against door 1010 to force door 1010 toward the open position and thereafter holds the door in the open position to allow entry and exit of pers
、ons or items through door 1010. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, actuator 4040 is positioned above door 3030 so that arm 3030 is able to make initial contact with the door near upper right corner 6060 of door 1010, about 3 inches below its top edge. As arm 3030 forces door 1010 toward its open pos
、ition, wheel 2121 rolls horizontally along the doors surface in a direction toward the doors left side 6464. In the second direction A, arm 3030 is moved away from contact with door 1010, whereby door 1010 is free to swing back to its closed position, under its own power, and with any additional ass
、istance from a conventional door closer (not shown), if provided. In one embodiment, (shown in FIG. 14), arm 1010 does not contact door 1010 when it is in its initial “home” position prior to being pivoted to open door 1010. Arm may hover about an inch or two above the surface of door 1010 unless an
