7、wthorne and hisintention of writing the scarlet letter. nathaniel hawthorne wasborn in an impoverished noble new england s family, thedescendent of a long line of puritan ancestors. among hisancestors, 2 generations were big wheels in organs of powerof unite of religion and politics in colony areas.
8、 they persecuted heterodoxy by zealot of puritan. lonely childhoodbranded his personality with melancholy and taciturn. after hisfather was lost at sea when he was only four, his motherbecame overly protective and pushed him toward moreisolated pursuits. his childhood left him overly shy andbookish,
9、 and molded his life as a writer. hawthorne turned towriting after his graduation from bowdon college. thoughhawthorne attacked the harmful religious zealots and stiflingreligious doctrines of garvin, he viewed on the world withreligious sense of good and devil in his deep heart. hesummed up the soc
10、ial contradiction, which he didn t understand and was caused by the development of capitalismas abstract evil . as he said, the source of social evilscontradictions among individuals phenomenon of crime werenot in the material social life, but were caused by intrinsic evilin inner world of man. so h
11、awthorne wrote that the resolutionto social problems started with the omnipresent evil . he saidthat once the internal world was purified, many sin loafingabout external world would disappear. his focusing on theabstract evil decided his writing trend mostly. he preferreddescribing trans-natural, we
12、ird, horrible scenes or dark,unusual psychological activities in order to explore the rootsof all kinds of social hidden evil . he said himself only loyal tothe truth of heart, comprising the heart to a winding andextending cave and the writing to driving actively in ourcommon human nature . so he u
13、sually analyzed a person spsychology cutting off social conditions peeled off the evilexisting in everyone s heart layer off layer. hawthorne focusedon the problem of guilt cared for the deeper psychology andhis major novels generally dealt with sensational material, likepoisoning, murder, adultery,
14、 and crime, because he wasambitious to explore the result of sin, the effect on humanconscience of guilt, pride, egotism, and isolation. his exploration of the soul resulted from his skeptical attitudetoward the limited social reality that was characterized by arapid change in almost all aspects of
15、social life, and from hisseclusion of thinking. the central subject of hawthorne s majorworks was the human soul. according to him, there is evil inevery human heart, which may remain latent, perhaps, throughthe whole life; but circumstances may rouse it to activity. so inalmost every book he writes
16、, hawthorne discusses sin and evil.for example, in another his novel endicott and the red cross,he describes a pretty woman also wears a scarlet letter on hercloth. human s characters are complex and elusive anddifficult to see through. so it s no right to define the human scharacter good or evil si
17、mply and cleanly. just because of thecomplexity of the human character and the difference of thestandards of good and evil, these literatures are so readableand fascinating magnetically. just because he lived in an agewhen the dynamic influence of puritanism was gone and theimpact of romanticism and
18、 transcendentalism was large feltamong the intellectuals, and thus his view of man and humanhistory originates, to a great extent, is puritanism. the sensibility led to his understanding of evil being at the verycore of human life, which is typical of the calvinistic belief thathuman beings are basi
19、cally depraved and corrupted, hence,they should obey god to atone for their sins. just as i mentionabove, in many of his stories and novels, the puritan conceptof life is condemned, or the puritan past is shown in an almosttotally negative light, especially in his the scarlet letter. hawthorne is at
20、tracted in every way to the puritan world, eventhough he condemns its less humane manifestations. in thisparticular novel, hawthorne does not intend to tell a love storynor a story of sin, but focuses his attention on the moral,emotional, and psychological effects or consequences of thesin on the pe
21、ople in general and those main characters inparticular, so as to show us the tension between society andindividuals. as a man of literary craftsmanship, hawthorne isextraordinary. the structure and the form writings are alwayscarefully worked out to cater for the thematic concern. with hisspecial in
22、terest in the psychological aspect of human beings,there isn t much action or physical movement going on in hisworks and he is good at exploring the complexity of humanpsychology. so his drama is full of mental activities. thoughtpropels action and grows organically out of the interaction ofthe char
23、acters, as we can find in this novel. the generalintroduction of symbolism just as characterization anddialogue and plot work on the surface to move the story along,symbolism works under the surface to tie the storys externalaction to the theme. early in the development of the fictionalnarrative, sy
24、mbolism was often produced through allegory,giving the literal event and its allegorical counterpart a one-to-one correspondence. symbolism operates on the level of theunconscious. this does not mean that the author himself isunconscious of the process of creating symbolism - merelythat we, as reade
25、rs, accept its input without really understanding how it works. symbolism, therefore, is anintegral component of fiction, because it enriches the narrativeby pulling its message down to the level of our unconsciousness and anchoring it there. developed in the late19th century, symbolism is an art movement characterized bythe representation of the inner life of people through spiritualsymbols and ideas. it began as a rejection of the purely visualrealism of the impressionists, and the rationality of theindustrial age, in order to depict the symbols of ideas.traditionally modeled
