灵活多变的否定句

2、程或结果。并在研讨英语否定句时提出了两个很重要的概念：即否定范围理论（scope of negation）和否定中心理论（focus of negation）。否定范围理论即否定词（negative）否定后面的句子或分句意义局部，它不只否定谓语，还否定句子中某个成份；它所否定的对象可能是名词、代词、形容词、副词、不定式、分词、动名词或主动词等。I pretend not to know anything about it. 我假装对这件事一无所知。I am ashamed of not knowing it. 很抱歉我不知道这事。Not having heard from him, I wro

Or No, both are not.当没有上下文时，有两种解释：即可以理解为部分否定，也可理解为全部否定。 正象S.C Levison 和R.Quirk 等语言学家们指出那样，他们的表层结构都对应两个深层结构。因此，我们必须根据语境去进行逻辑分析，找出它们在特定语境中潜在的语义组合，进行理解。The small tree is not three feet tall.

7、这棵小树不足三英尺高。Not ten students have failed the semester exam. 不足十个学生考试不及格。not 用于数字前时，意义特殊，表示低于这个数字。 2. 英语中的静词否定方式no 英语中的静态否定方式在形式上是否定名词，代词和副词，即静词，实际上是否定句中的主要谓语动词，这样就否定了全句的意义。No 的否定范围就扩大到了全句，整个句子的意思就被否定了。由于汉语语法中没有这种否定方式，所以，我们在学习英语，翻译这种静态否定句子时，要译成动词否定句子，即：英语静态否定译成汉语的动态否定句式。 I have said no such things. 我根

8、本没说过这样的话。No exact time has been set. 不可能设定精确地时间。Nobody in this family is fit for art. 这家里没有一个搞艺术。He complained of nothing. 他毫无怨言。The sick man felt no better.这病人一点都没好转。He is none the wiser for all his wealth. 他虽然有钱，却丝毫没有因此而更聪明。The book was nowhere to be found. 什么地方都找不到那本书。从上面的例子可以看出，英语的这种静态否定是对句子的全部否

9、定，否定的语气强，而且还可以用在比较级的形容词或副词前面。然而，不是所有带有no 的词的否定句都是否定全句，而另有它意。如：He works no end. 译成： 他非常努力工作。We enjoyed his kindness no end. 译成：我们对他的好意感激不尽。He is no end of a fellow. 译成：他是个极好的人。We are confronted with no end of trouble. 译成：我们面临无数的麻烦。 因为no end 和 no end of 都是用来加强肯定语气的短语。一般用来加强动词和名词，有时是形容词所表达的概念。 中文常译作“无限

10、地/的”，“非常地/的”，“无数的”，“很多的”等。又如：There is nothing like fresh air to help you keep fit.(nothing like = nothing better) 没有什么能比新鲜空气更能使人保持健康的了。 He was nothing if not clever. 他非常聪明。（nothing if not = extremely） He is no fool.他很精明。（no =not at all） It is no joke. 这时件严肃的事。二. 形式否定与语义否定英语语言中的否定结构往往给人一种虚虚实实、声东击西、形式

11、与实质不相符合的现象，形式上否定的是A, 但实际意义上却是B，这种否定的虚实移位，往往造成歧义，学习时需细细辨析。 1. not表面上否定动词谓语，实际上否定后面的状语 He doesnt speak English well. 他英语说得不好。而不说：He speaks English not wellHe didnt go to work by bus. 他不是乘公共汽车上班的。 而不说：He went to work not by bus.I didnt do it for myself. 我在那件事并非为了自已。 而不说： I did it not for myself.She did

12、nt return the same person that she left. 返回时，她同先前离开时判若两人。The student didnt sit there listening to the teacher. 那个学生坐在那里，并没有听老师讲课。 2. 形式上否定名词，实际上否定动词 No reference books in the reading-room are to be taken out. 本阅览室参考书均不得携带出室外。（全否定，前面已提到） 3.形式上否定谓语，实际上否定主语 Everyone can not enjoy the music. (Not everyo

13、ne can enjoy the music.部分否定，前面已提到)4. 在not and 结构中，否定的往往是and 后的部分，但否定词 not 往往否定谓语。 The house is not big and comfortable. 这房子很大，但不舒服。 He doesnt speak Russian and French. 他说俄语，但不说法语。 Dont drink and drive. 不要酒后开车。 We cant put on airs and make people like us. 要摆架子，人们就不会喜欢我们。5. 在be likely / possible that结

14、构中,实际否定的是从句中的谓语动词。如:It isnt likely / possible that food prices will fall this year. 今年物价似乎不会下跌。 英语否定词在句中的位置，及实际意义上的否定对英语句子的理解非常重要。因为，一般来说，英语语法都比较有逻辑，唯独英语的否定结构，似乎不合情理，甚至违反逻辑，这和我们的汉语否定方式截然不同。所以，学习英语时，我们总感到不易理解，或理解错误。Practice:1.这台车床不能再用了，那台也一样。 This lathe can not be used any longer, and that one cant,

15、too. 正：This lathe can not be used any longer, and that one cnat either. 或：This lathe can not be used any longer, neither (nor) can that one. 2.你不必为你的军衔和薪金担心。 You wont have to worry about rank and pay.正：You wont have to worry about rank or pay. 3.这些规章制度多不完善！ How not perfect the rules and regulations

16、are! 正：How imperfect the rules and regulations are! （可用反义词或带有否定词缀的词来表示。 ）4.我认为这不值得一试。I think this is not worth trying. 正：I dont think this is worth trying. 5.他来这儿不是为了求得我们的帮助。 He came here not to ask us for help. 正：He did not come here to ask us for help. 6.未经允许，任何人不得入内。 Anybody can not come in witho

17、ut permission. 正：Nobody can come in without permission.(任何不是汉语中常用的否定句式，而在英语中与any构成的合成词或被any修饰的词语作主语时，谓语动词不能用否定式，因此any . not的表达形式不符合英语的习惯。翻译这类句子时须用否定形式的主语+肯定形式的谓语。但当any的合成词或any所修饰的词带有后置定语时，谓语可以用否定式，如： 干那种事的人都是不诚实的。 Anyone who does that isnt honest. )7.听到这个消息后，没有一个人不感到兴奋。 Having heard the news, nobody

18、 did not feel excited. 正：Having heard the news, everybody felt excited. (汉语中常用没有+主语+不+谓语这一双重否定的结构，而英语中否定形式的主语习惯上不能与否定形式的谓语连用。因此nobody. not的结构不符合英语的表达习惯。翻译这类句子时，（1）可把主语和谓语都改成肯定形式；(2)也可用另一结构的双重否定式：there be +否定的主语 + 否定形式的定语从句，如： There was nobody who did not feel excited. 或：There was nobody but felt excited. )8.这两本书都不是英国出版的。 Both of the books are not published in England. 正：Neither of the books is published in England. 9. 我不同意所有这些方案。 I dont agree to all these projects.正：I agree to none
