2、ng that cannot be ignored.in the first half of the 19th century, westward expansion in the territory of the united states in the process of setting up a new series of western states, as is called the famous "westward movement”. the movement made the labor force5 layout of united states changed;

3、 it promoted the formation of unified, domestic markets and developed rapid of the eastern and western commercial complementary. however, on the other hand, it made the contradiction between the two kinds of economic ascended. in the mid-19th century, the conflict was in the most intense as the nort

4、hern bourgeoisies and the peasants supported to converse the raw materials and domestic markets who stressed to enlarge exports and free labor force, while the southern slave-owners attempted to extended slavery to the west when they transported the cotton to england and imported industrial products

5、 instead in the mean time.in 1860, abraham lincoln, the candidate of republican party, was elected president. after then, eleven states seceded from the union in succession and created a separate confederated nation, which resulted in the breakout of the civil war in april, 1861. at the beginning of

6、 the war, the strength of the north far exceeded that of the south with a great advantage. besides, the north had advanced industry, railway network connections and rich reserve of food while the south had even no industry or railway. however, the military of south was fully prepared with all the ar

7、ming, equipment and more sophisticated military hardware. moreover, lincoln in the early years of the war9s aim was just to restore the unity of the south and the north, so the government didnt declare the liberation of the northern slaves. therefore, in the first phase of the war, the north suffere

8、d defeat in the military, in spite of a series of brilliant victory at the north-west linefaced with the inferior circumstance, lincoln became aware of the need for the liberation of slaves. in may, 1862, lincoln issued homestead act. on september 22 in the same year, he promulgated emancipation pro

9、clamation, announced that before january 1st, 1863, if the south rebels still did not lay down their arms, the slave states would be free since that day. news spread to the south and thousands of slaves fled to the north. even the british working class launched a campaign to support the north, forci

10、ng the british government to give up the original plan of interfering in the civil war. meanwhile, after lincoln government taking a series of powerful actions, large amounts of slaves enrolled in the northern army.in 1863, the northern military started to turn around. at the same year, on july 1st,

11、 the gettysburg victory had become an important turning point in the civil wa匸 from then on, the north possessed the initiative gradually. in 1864, supreme commander of the north adopted a new tactic that he simultaneously launched two powerful contrary lines to the east and the west. on one side, t

12、hey aimed at consuming the power of the main objectives of the enemy in the east; in the west, on the other side, they penetrated into the interior of the enemy with a strong force and cut off the connections of the north-east and the south-east of the "southern alliances. afterwards, the famou

16、hange the primitively negative strategy. president lincoln could follow the historical trend and accepted people's will as a bourgeois politician, taking actions to free black slaves and arm them. what's more, he promulgated homestead act and made military reform, thus increasingly motivatin

17、g the north people and the southern slaves to devoting themselves to the wa匚 black slaves got away from the south on a large scale and their riot not only destroyed the southern economy but also pinned down the enemy's military forces. lincoln once gave a high appraisal to the black for their ou

18、tstanding contributions. furthermore, white labors in the south also boycotted the reactionary rule of slave-owners with a variety of actions, including escaping from escuage, staging strikes and insurrections, which offered help to the north in the military and defeated the south in the battle. mea

21、ut also to destroy the enemy s political structure, economic base and social organization, until the enemy completely surrendered obviously, the causalities were tremendous.the latest scientific and technological achievements were widely used in the war at the same time, giving the war a new look; t

22、he use of the invention of wireless telegraphy greatly facilitated the military command, so that remote command became a reality. land forces made extensive use of army equipment such as armored trains, landmines, torpedoes and high irons to improve force motilities and logistics capacities. infantr

23、y took full use of muzzle-loading rifles, increased the range and improved the lethality. artillery made heavy use of in rifled guns, exploding bullets in the mean time. moreover, they used photographic technology and high-altitude balloons to do the reconnaissance. in addition, many advanced achiev

24、ements were put into the word. to some degree, the war led to a reform in military.the american civil war is the second bourgeois revolution in its history. the northern victory in the war established the big bourgeoisie of the north in the country's dominant position. the civil war eliminated s

25、lavery, and thus pushed the united states to clear the way for rapid development of capitalism. the implementation of homestead act accelerated the development of the west, and promoted the development of agricultural capitalism. therefore, till the late 19lh century, the united states jumped to bec

26、ome the world's most advanced agricultural and industrial capitalist powers. meanwhile, the war also hit against the remnants of british colonial forces. in fact, the south and slavery plantations economy were overall behind the united kingdom. the united kingdom, though, had to give up control

27、of the north american colonies after the war of independence, its economic impact was still very durable. cotton plantations were used to provide raw materials for the british textile industry, so the war also eliminated the british forces.besides, the war promoted the development of american democracy. it abolished slavery and emancipated black slaves. although the human rights of black slaves did not been completely resolved, after all, they got more recognitions than ever before, such like that they were free and acquired political citize
