1、我的宿舍生活(My Dormitory Life)我的宿舍生活pared with the forty year old shabby dormitory i am livi ng in now, the one i lived in for three years in high school washeaven: three students shared one brand new suite with air con diti oners and a bathroom.in three years time we cha nged it thoroughly:the color of
2、the floor turned from bright pink into muddygray, and the closet a hive of in sects proliferat ing among piles of rotte n our masterpiece was the bathroom, a never drying swampwhich served as the habitat of various kinds of mold, and eve n rode nts, rats would occasi on ally take the trouble to pay
3、us a visit, an d., all three of us felt like sobb ing whe n we at last had to say good bye to our lovely filthy dormitory. maybe it is because that the dormitory had c hanged us as well as we d changed it.the first less on our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves. fran kly speak ing, we w
4、ere not good stude nts at all. i still remember the un derwear that was soaked in soapy water for one and a half years before it was fin ally throw n away. almost each of the boys dormitories hadgradually developed its own unique“fragranee ” usually a mixture ofrotte n fruit, un washed socks, stunk
5、towels and some junk food. we could tell one dormitory from ano ther by sniffing in stead of look ing. our tolera nee towards un tid in ess was amaz ing.however, in spite of all this, we really did makesome progress. bit by bit, we started to wash dirty clothes before they stunk, clea ned the garbag
6、e bin whe n it could hold no more trash, we eve n used brushes in a no t-sc-successful attempt to refurbish the floor. the point was that we were not obeying any order, we did every bit of the cleaning for ourselves, because we wan ted to live in a better place. though nothing we did could be called
7、 an achievement, it was the first time we fully bore the con seque nces of our behavior, and took the resp on sibility.thus it was not surpris ing that i ofte n found myself the only one to clean up myuniversitydormitory which looked no better than a garbagebin whe n my roommates felt no rmal of it.
8、whentalking about our dormitory life, and probably all the dormitorylife, we should n ever leave out one thing, this was what we called“ bedtalks ” . though it was considered“illegal, ” there was nothing to stopus from deliberatelystarti nga heated discussi on right after lights wereout. it was our
9、favorite and the only way of ending our day, and we were as pun ctual for it as our pare nts are for work. what was the most mon topic?girls, of course! what other topics were there for three energetic adolesce nt males lying fortably in bed? wejudged them,ra nked them, argued over them night after
10、night without feeling the slightest sense of boredom for three whole years. were we mani acs? who is not a maniac at eightee n?of course, there were other things we talked about. i still remember one night six of us squeezed ourselves in the most unfortable posture onto three beds and held a “confer
11、ence ” discussing whether we should carry out an “ impeachment” with our monitor the followingday. it was not thathe was troubled in any sort of scandal, but that we were just so disappo in ted at his work. by one o clock in the morni ng, we fin ally came to a conclusion that included two major poin
12、ts. first, we could not reach an agreeme nt on what our mon itor s problems really were, because every one had his own opinion. sec ond, we could think of no body suitable to substitute him. from the next day on the six idealistic extremists turned into pragmatic realists. we sig ned a peace treaty
13、with life, and as to our mon itor, he tur ned out to be the best one in school.i assume that this is how those“ bed talks ” changed us. ask anypsychiatrist and you ll know that to lie fortably in bed is the only way to makesomeoneopen his mind. therefore during bed talks we were able to touch the mo
14、st intrinsicpart of each other,and scrutinizethe detailsof a totally different mind. i wasamazedat realizingthe great differeneeamong people in terms of their ways of thinking, and the diversity of personalities. this changed our attitudes toward others, and madeus more un der sta nding tha n ever.i
15、f you ask me, amongall the bed talks, which one gave me the deepest impressi on, i would say it was that ni ght whe n i in sisted that louis was the prettiest girl in our class and jerry said he would rather die tha n agree with me. now after three years jerry is dating louis and i amstill sin gle.
16、what a quack!frankly, i could hardly think of anything particularly special about dormitory life. there was n ever such a thi ng that had a dramatic impact on me. all that occurred to mewere bits of trivial memories, such as the tears of lance after he was refused by a girl, thegrotesque expressions
17、on james s face whe n he fin ally got his pills for stomach ache afterstaying for half an hour with the school doctor who was notorious for his loquacity, and the ni ghtwhe n jerry dragg inga broke n leg hopped all theway back with an arm around myneck. these maymeannothing to outsiders, but to myro
18、ommates and methey are priceless. it was exactly through these trivial things that we grew and matured. by the time we had to say good bye to our dormitory, we all knew that we were no Ion ger the kids of there three years before. we all knew that this precious period of time would never e back again since we were all changed by the dormitory, and because of that, w
