29、he twentieth-century architectural history of Turkey, while defining and representing a“modern” identity we witness countless attempts to respond to the East/West duality. In these attempts, architects and scholars swayed back and forth between the promotion of their Western identity and the creatio
30、n of an“authentic”Anatolian/Turkish modern. TheThis essay consists of three main sections. In the first section we discuss the cultural baggage of the East/West divide. In the second section we offer a review of twentieth-century architecture in Turkey. Finally, in the last section, we focus on the
31、years between 2000 and 2010 and the strategies proposed by architects for moving beyond the identity question. Mind the GAP: Bridge Between Two ContinentsIn 1965, Life Magazine published a special issue on Turkey as part of the Life World Library series. The issue included photographs and short comm
32、entaries on daily life in Turkey. In the lead article entitled“Bridge Between Continents,”Turkey was introduced to American ers as follows “Some countries are fixed termini.Others are wayside halts. Some are junctions. A few areone because it is an acknowledgement of the separation of two continents
33、 Asia and Europe a forced division created on the Eurasian continent due to an imposed mental and cultural gap.The bridge analogy works as a reaffirmation of the assumed differences between Asia and Europe. It embraces all the prejudices and the stereotypes associated with“the East”and“the West.” Th
34、e Life Magazine special issue was typical in this respect with stereotypical representations of this duality portrayed in the photographs of the Eastern and Western faces of Turkey. The images of the urban and the rural, career women and village women, people working and people relaxing, places of p
35、roduction and places of decay were all juxtaposed to elaborate on this dual character. As a result, the bridge analogy was not a representative of an in-between state or a third space that is neither East nor West. Rather, Turkey was understood to be both East and West, never truly co together.In hi
36、s 1909 essay“Bridge and Door,”Georg Simmel discussed bridges in relation to the human will to connect. Simmel claims that “things must be separated from one another in order to be together. Practically as well as logically, it would be meaninglessformer was based on an understanding of modernsan int

42、nother in our consciousness, things“which we have previously somehow isolated from one another.”3The separation of Europe and Asia was conceived first and we are able to connect them by a bridge only because we can relate them to one another.In their book, The Myth of Continents,4 geographers Martin
43、 Lewis and Karen Wigen showed how our knowledge of geography cannot always be considered scientific, since there are cultural constructs, including the basic units of meta- geography, the continents. Lewis and Wigen stated that the geographic definition of a continent as a continuous landmass design
44、ates Europe as a subcontinent of Eurasian continent. However, theexotic, uncivilized and backwards. Starting with the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 192

Even though memories of the i
46、ndependence warcharacterizations formed the image awhich theOttomansand later the citizens of Turkey tried to formulate their modern identity.Multiple formulations on the possible relations between Western civilization and Ottoman/Turkish culture played a central role in the nineteenth-century polit
47、ics of the Ottoman Empire as it searched for ways to make itself more powerful and“modern.” What could the Empire do to be strong again? Adopt Western civilization but stay faithful to a Turkish/Ottoman culture?Be more tul to an Islamic civilization and Ottomanheldthe European forces were still fres
48、h inculture, and figure out what went wrong? Or accept that Western civilization and Western culture are inseparable and internalize Western/European culture?Architectural discourse was not isolated from these discussions. In the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the prevailin
49、g attitude among Ottoman architects and scholars of art and architecture was to accept the modern classification of architectural history into“historical”and“non-historical”styles (as in the famous A History of Architecture by Sir Banister Fletcher). This division was based on an idea of linear deve
50、lopment according to which humaand human creations evolve from the primitive to the complex, from the traditional to the modern. In this division, “historical” styles referred to WesternTurkish minds, being part of the Western civilization was an unavoidable necessity to them. The founding father of
51、 the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, stated “Surviving in the world of modern civilization depends upon changing ourselves. This is the sole law of any progress in the social, economic, and scientific spheres of life.”7This clear direction gave rise to a series of reforms that supported the develop
52、ment of modern/ international architecture in Turkey, replacing Ottoman revivalist architecture. This revivalist architecturemapof the convoluted geographical boundarybetween Europe and Asia, from the eighteenth century onwards, was in the service of the separation and definition of the Europeans in
53、 opposition to Asians a civilized, progressive and modern Europe versus a barbaric, backwards and traditional East.Re-examining the mental division of the Eurasian continent into Europe and Asia leads us to understand that the bridge analogy is a product of a Eurocentric worldview. A bridge was invo
