2、udiCauseway,BaitiCausewayandRuangongMound.3ThenameofWestLakewasfixedasearlyastheTangDynasty(618-907).BeforetheTangDynasty,thelakehadvariousnamessuchasWulinWater,MingshengLake,JinzhongLake,Longchuan,Qianyuan,QiantangLake,andShangLake,etc.IntheSongDynasty(9601279),theChineserenownedpoetSuDongpowroteap

3、oemtopraisetheWestLakeandcomparedittoXizi,aChineselegendarybeauty.Sincethen,theWestLakehasanotherelegantnameXiziLake.4ThebeautyoftheWestLakeliesinitslingeringcharmthatsurvivesthechangeofseasonsinayearandofhoursinaday.Amongitsbeautifulsights,themostfamoussitesaretheTenSightsinWestLakeandtheTenNewSigh

8、hesymboloftheirlove.Thebridgewasalsothescenewheretheymadeupafteralongseriesofupsanddowns.Thankstothelovestorybetweenthehumanandtheimmortal,thebrokenbridgeattractsnumerousvisitorsandhasitslegendaryreputationspreadfarandwidealloverChina.Manypeoplebelievethebridgeisthenumberoneplaceforpeopleinlove.11 A

9、utumn Moon over the Calm Lake(平湖秋月)(平湖秋月)12At the western end of Bai Causeway is located a lakeside park which houses a stone tablet bearing the etched calligraphy of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, which reads: Autumn Moon on Calm Lake. The lake is a special place to appreciate the moon and the

10、 effect of moonlight on the land. The moon seems especially bright over the waters. The hills look purplish bathed in the moonlight. The best time for nighttime viewing is on Mid-Autumn Day.1314 Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard (曲院荷风曲院荷风)15ThistypicalWestLakescenehasearneditsfamesincetheSout

11、hernSongDynasty,whenthelakesideareawithanabundantgrowthoflotusoffitsshoreswasknownasCrookedCourtyard,andwasthelocationofabrewery.Peoplesaidthesmelloflotusflowersandwineblendedbythecoollakebreezeswasintoxicating.Thereareplentyoflotusplantsstillbloomoffitsshores.Theystandgracefullyerectinthelake,asift

12、heyknewtheyhadvisitorscomingtoadmiretheirbeauty.16 Spring Dawn at Su Causeway (苏堤春晓)17SuCausewaybecameatouristattractionasearlyas1090.Thatyear,SuDongpo,afamouspoetintheSongDynastyandthegovernorofHangzhou,hadthelakedredged.Thesiltanddebriswerepiledupandformedintoacauseway.Inordertohonorthepoetgoverno

13、r,localpeoplenamedtheCausewayafterhim.Todayscausewayistheresultofmanyrefurbishingprojectsovercenturies.RomanticizedasSpringDawnbySuCauseway,thesceneryhasstayedonthetopofthebesttenresortsaroundtheWestLakesincetheSouthernSongDynasty(1127-1279).18Whenspringcomes,willowtreesswingslightlyinthebreeze.Peac

14、htreesarefullofblooms,givingoutintoxicatingfragrance.Sixbridgesarethebestplacetoenjoyspringtime.Atdawn,thelakeissoserenethatonlychirpsofbirdscanbeheard.Thelakesurfacemirrorstheskyandbridgereflections.Peachblossomsresemblesmilingfaces.Walkingonthecauseway,onecanlookatthelakeandthesurroundinghills,abs

15、orbingallthevisualandauralpleasurescreatedbythebreathtakingpanorama.19Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds ( (双峰插云双峰插云) )20Twin peaks are the Northern Peak and Southern Peak. One locates southwest to the West Lake and the other locates northwest west. Northern Peak is with an elevation of 256.9 meters, So

16、uthern Peak is with an elevation of 355 meters. The two peaks face each other at a distance of more than 5 kilometers. On a drizzly day in spring or autumn, visitors may find a spectacular view of the two peaks while they look up from the Hongchun Bridge. It seems as if an enchanting landscape paint

17、ing was hanging before them with the peaks disappearing and appearing amidst drifting clouds. 21Three Pools Mirroring the Moon(三潭印月)(三潭印月)22Thereareislandsinthelakeandthreearelakeontheislands.OnthesouthsideofthelargestofthethreemanmadeislandsintheOuterLake,therearethreehollowstonepagodasrisingfromth

18、ewater,eachwithfiveopenings.ThethreestonetowerswerefirstbuiltinYuanyou4thyear(1089)oftheSongDynasty,withthewonderfulsceneryofonemoonintheskyhavingthreereflectioninthelake,itisoneofthewonderfulscenesoftheWestLake.2324Viewing Fish at flower harbor(花港观鱼)(花港观鱼) 25FlowerPondParkoccupiesanareaoftwenty-one

19、hectaresonapeninsulainthesouthwestcornerofthelake.InitsheartistheRedFishPond,wherepeoplecanrelaxtothesightofbrightlycolorfulfishswimmingaroundandtothebriskmelodyofbirdsong.Tostaywithnatureisahighlyenjoyableexperience.26Sunset glow at Leifeng pagoda(雷峰夕照)(雷峰夕照)27LeifengPagoda,ontheEveningGlowHillsitu

20、atedonthesouthshoreoftheWestLake,waserectedincelebrationofthesonhisfavoriteconcubine,HuangFei,gavebirthto.The7storiedpagodawasastoriedpaviliontypestructure,builtofbrickandwood.Intheancienttime,LeifengPagodaandBaochuPagodastoodfarapartfacingeachother.LeifengPagodaappearedtobeanoldgentleman,butBaochuP

21、agodaappearedtobeabeauty.Whenthesunwassetting,thepagodabathedintheeveningglowlookedradiantlybeautiful.Itwasthereforenamedas“LeifengPagodainEveningGlow”.InMingDynasty,thepagodawasfiredbytheJapanesebanditsandcollapsedatlastonSeptember,251924bythecustomoflocalpeopletotakeabrickfromitslowerstoriesasatalismanorsouvenir.28
