16、de rich A person from any social background could, potentially, make a fortune, but the American aristocracy scorned the newly rich industrialists and speculators. The various social climbers and ambitious speculators who attend Gatsbys parties evidence the greedy scramble for wealth. Just as Americ

17、ans have given America meaning through their dreams for their own lives, Gatsby instills Daisy with a kind of idealized perfection that she neither deserves nor possesses. American dream in the 1920s is ruined by the unworthiness of its objectmoney and pleasure. Do you think Gatsby deserves to be ca

18、lled “the great”? It is complicated to say Gatsby deserves to be “great” or not. For one thing, Gatsbys capacity to dream makes him “great” . Gatsby was ambitious, hardworking, generous and passionate. He was so extremely loyal to his love Daisy that he could do anything to get Daisy back: he did sh

19、ady business to earn money and social position; he threw luxurious parties just to draw Daisys attention; he could take the blame for a death that he did not cause. Gatsby never gave up his idealistic dream while striving for material joy. Gatsby kept on making efforts to balance the both sides. In

20、this respect, he is great. For another thing, Gatsby never realized that Daisy wasnt the girl he loved anymore. He is not so wise and he can not see the people clearly. Gatsby was so innocent that he staked everything on his dreams, not realizing that his dreams are unworthy of him. In this respect,

21、 He wasnt sober enough to be great. The schedule is a reflection of Gatsbys determination and ambition. It reveals that he is hard on himself in pursuit of his goalto be an upper-class man. On one hand, we can know that he is persistent in pursuing his American Dream- to attain wealth and happiness through his struggle.
