12、echildishthings.Thetimehasetoreaffirmourenduringspirit;tochooseourbetterhistory;tocarryforwardthatpreciousgift,thatnobleidea,passedonfromgenerationtogeneration:theGod-givenpromisethatallareequal,allarefree,andalldeserveachancetopursuetheirfullmeasureofhappiness.Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournation,w

13、eunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshort-cutsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeenthepathforthefaint-hearted-forthosewhopreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk-takers,thedoers,themakersofthings-somecelebratedbutmoreoft

14、enmenandwomenobscureintheirlabour,whohavecarriedusupthelong,ruggedpathtowardsprosperityandfreedom.Forus,theypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrossoceansinsearchofanewlife.Forus,theytoiledinsweatshopsandsettledthewest;enduredthelashofthewhipandplowedthehardearth.Forus,theyfoughtanddied,i

17、easantdecisions-thattimehassurelypassed.Startingtoday,wemustpickourselvesup,dustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.Foreverywherewelook,thereisworktobedone.Thestateoftheeconomycallsforaction,boldandswift,andwewillact-notonlytocreatenewjobs,buttolayanewfoundationforgrowth.Wewillbuildth

18、eroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedourmerceandbindustogether.Wewillrestoresciencetoitsrightfulplace,andwieldtechnology'swonderstoraisehealthcare'squalityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandthesoiltofuelourcarsandrunourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsan

19、dcollegesanduniversitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Andallthiswewilldo.Now,therearesomewhoquestionthescaleofourambitions-whosuggestthatoursystemcannottoleratetoomanybigplans.Theirmemoriesareshort.Fortheyhaveforgottenwhatthiscountryhasalreadydone;whatfreemenandwomencanachievewhenimaginat

20、ionisjoinedtomonpurpose,andnecessitytocourage.Whatthecynicsfailtounderstandisthatthegroundhasshiftedbeneaththem-thatthestalepoliticalargumentsthathaveconsumedusforsolongnolongerapply.Thequestionweasktodayisnotwhetherourgovernmentistoobigortoosmall,butwhetheritworks-whetherithelpsfamiliesfindjobsatad

21、ecentwage,caretheycanafford,aretirementthatisdignified.Wheretheanswerisyes,weintendtomoveforward.Wheretheanswerisno,programswillend.Andthoseofuswhomanagethepublic'sdollarswillbeheldtoaccount-tospendwisely,reformbadhabitsanddoourbusinessinthelightofday-becauseonlythencanwerestorethevitaltrustbetw
