、ry expensive to the point of being quite exclusive. Affordability is now a huge issue, but availability is at least as big an issue. And I think this is one of the true failures其中一个真正的失败of the Dutch government-run planning tradition.

It has not been possible, ever since the huge housing shortages after World War II,供应一直无法追上需求to catch up with demand. Prices are skyrocketing, and it's proving almost impossible以我们需要的速度和数量来建屋to build in any sort of speed and volume for what we need.

、#39;re gonna see if we can cut it up into, like, individual homes." And then she said, "I'd like to have the one on the corner." And that's when the idea was born to do the multigenerational living. It is going to get warmer before the week

、Yeah. We've moved away from that idea by being closer together.我在大概13年前I started working here开始在阿姆斯特丹北工作in the north of Amsterdam about 13 years ago. I had started my first office at the NDSM shipyard,所以多年来,我都踩单车经过这个地区so I biked past this area many times for a

、 number of years,没想到我会在这里建自己的家never expecting that I'd be building my own home in this area as well. There used to be a big concrete factory called Struyk Verwo. And I remember this place closing down,慢慢看到混凝土离开这个地区gradually saw this concrete kind of leaving the area,我心想:“好了

、,他们会重建这里”and then I thought, "Okay, they're gonna redevelop it." The municipality issued the plots以先到先得的方式卖♥♥给独♥立♥的建筑商on a first-come-first-serve basis for individual builders. These build-it-yourself

、could make it happen together. I wanted to have, like, a very specific plot in this row. So I knew that, you know, we needed to be, like, pretty much the first in line. My parents-in-law, they had a camper. We drove the camper to the parking lot

、而政♥府♥会在停车场那里举♥行♥自建市场where they were gonna have the build-it-yourself market. We were there for three weeks before the doors opened,然后拿到我们想要的地皮and then we could claim our plot. We would get reactions like, "I wo

、uld never want to live with my parents." Or, "Wow, that's quite a risk you're taking."还有“为什么你们想这样做?”And, "Why would you wanna do this?"我想是因为做这件事很不一样,对吗?I think because it's different, right? To do this. So that was really hard on us, on

、all of us. Of course, we had the notion that我们希望能够尽快过这样的生活we would be in this situation as soon as possible, we hoped. But then, the building of this project took, like, two years. Gus would do the designing and the house. And I was taking care of the c

、hildren. Well, actually, first we had one child,然后过程中我又怀了另一个and then I just got another one in between. So I did everything by myself. Sometimes I felt like a single mom during the process. I was working full-time actually, so it was a bit o

、 be here, right? It was a little further up this way, it was here. So we actually didn't meet here but a little bit further back? How would I describe Jantien? Very soc

、ially aware. A wonderful mother. And, yeah, the love of my life. I'm a union official,而我代表荷兰所有的社工and I represent all social workers in the Netherlands. Inequality in the society is growing and growing. It's a very big problem. I try to empo

、wer people and fill the gap,而古斯作为一个建筑师,也在做相同的事and Gus is doing kind of the same things as an architect. I met Jantien at a party at the NDSM shipyard. We pretty much bumped into each other underneath the big crane. I was just going home, and then he walke

、d with speakers. But it was really heavy, and I was with my bike, as a real Dutch.我问:“可以帮你搬这个喇叭吗?”And I said, "Can I help you with lifting this speaker?" He said, "Yeah, yeah, that would be so nice. It has to-"然后他我要把喇叭送到别的地方 我们之后就开始聊天And so h

And I was like, "Wow I just read Jane Jacobs also. It's nice." He said, "Yeah, I'm really into it." Jane Jacobs is a lot about street life, diversity. And we both feel like it's very important to ha

、ve a livable city. So that was where we connected with each other so much. It's a very fluid process between the two of us, I guess,令这个房♥子成真and how the- how the home came into being. We asked Henk and Elly to participate in a series of wor

、kshops.我们到了古斯的办公室We visited Gus' office然后他说所有人可以绘画出他们的梦想and he said everyone can sketch out their dream,他们想要什么,还有什么对他们重要what they want and what's important to them. And then Gus worked all that into a kind of compromise. For example, for me, I love cooking,所以大厨房&he

、arts;对我来说很重要so a big kitchen was really important to me. But then the living room didn't have to be so big. Actually, I like a living room to be cozy, like, you feel safe and comfortable. Hey, Carice. How are you? The important

、 thing for me was that there was a lot of light in the house. I don't like a dark house.在这三代同宅里In this three-generation house,我们要解决这种矛盾的环境we had to resolve these kind of, like, two contradictory contexts. Both households want some form of, like, proximity to each

、 other. But they also want privacy. So, we didn't want to create, let's say, like, one big family house. Carice, do you want to take an apple to school?-好 -好的- Yes. - Okay. If I'm making the sandwiches for my kid

、s in the morning,我外父在同一个地方,同一个时间it's okay to not have my father-in-law also making his sandwiches做三文治就是不可能at the same time, in the same place. So, the building actually is basic-就是两个公♥寓♥叠在一起it's just two apartments on top of each other,然后它们前后都共用同一个出入

、口and they share entrances on the front and the back. And then if you're stacking two homes on top of each other,在建屋的计划中就要解决楼梯的问题you're gonna have to resolve a staircase in the housing plan. There's basically two things you can do. So you can ki

、nda shove the stairs in a corner of the building假装它并不存在and pretend they're not there,又或是你可以让它成为这房♥子的中心or you can give them, like, this very central role in the building,让它成为雕塑般的元素and have it be a very sculptural element. We call it a scissor staircase. You have two st

、aircases landing on every floor. Here we have our staircase,它由我们的厨房♥开始 上去就是我们的客厅which starts in our kitchen and goes up to our living room. In the back, you see the closed funnel of the staircase of my parents-in-law,而那是由地下开始,上到这一层which starts at the ground floor an

、d goes up to this landing,然后之后再上去下一层and then subsequently goes up to the next landing. And this leads to the opportunity让这房♥子能够改装成不同的结构where the home is actually able to undergo different configurations.随着时间过去 家庭的结构也会改变,对吧?As time progresses, households change composition, right? So, right now we have kids, and the kids are gonna grow old.
