General Introduction (1) The name of the Country and its parts The full official n
12、ame of the country is the United States of America, usually referred to as the U.S.A. The United States includes 50 states and a federal district of Columbia, which is the seat of the federal government. The two states (Alaska and Hawaii ) are separated from the continental united states. (2) The na
13、tional Flag The Stars and the Stripes. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies , the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: red symbolizes courage, White symbolizes freedom and Blue represents loyalty and justice.3. Geographical Features (1) L

(4) The three distinct areas The United States can be divided into three distinct areas according to their geographical f
18、eatures: the eastern part, the western part and Great Plains in between. The eastern part consists of the highlands formed by the Appalachian Range. It holds one sixth of the territory. The western part consists of high plateaus and mountains, which extend from Canada through the western part of the
19、 United States to Mexico and further south. The whole area of this part olds one-third of the countrys territory on the continent. The Great Plains lie between the Appalachians in the east and the Rocky Mountains in the west. (5) Rivers,Lakes and Mountain The Mississippi River is the longest and big
20、gest river in the North American, often known as the “father of waters” to American Indians. The Great Lakes,the worlds largest Group of freshwater lakes, lies between the boundary of Canada and the United States: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. The famous Niag
21、ara Falls is located on the U.S.-Canadian border between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. There are two major mountains in the United States. One is the Appalachian Range, another is the Rocky Mountains. The Rockies is the backbone of the North America continent and is also known as the Continental divid
22、e.(6) Geographical Regions The United States is commonly divided into six major regions: New England, the Mid-Atlantic States, the South, the Midwest, the southwest and the West. New England consists of six states in the northeastern corner : Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhod

It is famous for its long history, where the Europeans made their first settlements and it is famous for having some of the top-ranking universities and colleges, including Harvard, Yale and MIT. Mid-Atlantic States lie between New England and the South Atlantic States, including D
24、elaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., New York, Virginia, and West Virginia.The south is composed of 16 states and the District of Columbia.
