怪不得一开始会给那个十字路口还有庄园里的翅膀来个镜头，后来方知它们都影响着察克在不同境遇下会做出什么样的人生决定。

彼得森太太：“好，星期四见”。是又见面了，不过是四年以后！

未见察克其人，先闻其声，从一句“时间无情的支配着我们”开始让我们逐渐认识到了他是一位联邦快递人员，因工作关系，一天到晚飞来飞去，接收邮件，分类邮件，送递邮件，督导员工，种种这些事情让他必须和时间打交道，跟时间赛跑。“在那令人心惊，无情的监工试图令我们失业之前，我们只有这么多时间……”这是一句多么明确而有力的催人努力工作的话。他是一位挺棒的工作者。

天有不测风云，人有旦夕祸福，这句话不得不老被人说起，事实就是这么个样。或许你对自己的人生寄望并不很高，或许你并没有抱怨自己的生活有哪里的不幸，或许你只想着每天有活干，有东西吃，平平安安就别无所求了，可是不是，命运不因你的要求有多小就会给你的挫折少。在没有多余征兆的情况下，察克所乘飞机失事，深夜里，南太平洋上，机上所有人员命在旦夕……“意外”也是人生中的一部分，当它来临时，躲也躲不掉。呵呵，去埋怨谁吗，没用。有人说“上帝在向你关闭所有门的时候不忘给你留下一扇窗”，飞机沉海后，被水压冲破的仓顶是不是上帝留给察克的一扇窗呢，如果是，那么其他机组人员的那扇窗在哪里？好了，我在此暂停对命运公平的议论，察克要接受的事实就是只有他活下来了，而且要面对独自一个人不知终期的孤岛求生。

在沙滩上写求救信号，试图划水离开，期盼哪艏顺过的航船突然出现，慢慢的察克失望了。每日只有无情的海浪向着小岛涌来又退去，却不吞噬，大海呀，你就干脆连同察克一起把这小岛给淹没吧！

这儿只有察克一人，一个救生圈，一颗怀表，一只排球，一个蓄电不多的手电筒，他要在这里，这个荒岛上，离开往日生活的喧嚣，在无法想象的生存条件下，独自度过没有预期的生命历程，甚至是余生！是的，他想过要自杀，粗劣的绳子剥夺了他选折如何结束自己生命的权利。或许他已经绝望了，也或许麻木了，然而怀表里的凯莉依然对着察克在微笑，头顶落下的椰子正中察克头上，“好吧，我还活着，我还需要吃的。”
