(13.2)g14MazdaSustainabilityReport2021SustainabilitygementEarthPeopleSocietySustainabilitygementResourceCirculationInthecontextofagrowingworldpopulation,theglobalcommunityisfacingchallengesduetoanincreaseindemandforresourcesandtheworseningenvironmentalissues,includingtherisingamountfwasteToaddressthesechallengesitisnecessarytotransitiontoacirculareconomythatconsidersmedium-andlong-termoutlooks,butalsotopromotetheconventional3R(reduce,reuse,andrecycle)initiativesinalleconomicactivities.Acirculareconomyintendstogeneratenewvaluewhilereducingresourceinputsandconsumptionandmakingefectiveuseofsocialstock.Plasticrecyclingisindispensableinachievingacirculareconomy.InJapan,currentlyanestimated60%ofplasticwastegoesthroughthermalrecycling,whichmeansthatthewasteiscombustedinincineratorstoproduceenergy.InWesterncountries,however,usuallycombustionisnotincludedintheconceptofrecycling.Also,aminuteamountofdioxinisgeneratedduringtheprocessofcombustion.Forthesereasons,companiesarerequiredtocontributetothecircularuseofresources(materialrecycling/chemicalrecycling)ortheuseofbiomassplastics.Ofthetotalvolumeofwaterexistingontheplanet,only0.01%isuseablebyhumans.Thissmallamountofwaterisnotdistributedaroundtheworld,soanumberofcountriesandregionsfacehighessIftheearthstemperaturecontinuestoincreaseduetoclimatechangeinthefuture,thesealevelswillriseowingtothethermalexpansionoftheoceansandmeltingicecaps.Thiswillresultinriversbeingcontaminatedwithsaltwater,ariseingroundwaterlevelsandotherdisastersthatwillreducetheamountoffreshwateravailabletohumans.Meanwhile,theUnitedNationsWorldWaterDevelopmentReport2018statesthatby2050,globaldemandforwaterisexpectedtoincreaseby20-30%from2010,drivenbypopulationgrowth,economicdevelopmentandchangingconsumptionpatterns,amongotherfactors.Companiesmustaddresstheissuesregardingglobalwaterresourcesinordertoconductsustainablebusinessactivities.
