hisnamelivesoninsingaporethroughschools,hospitalsand,ofcourse,raffleshotel,whereprincephilipandistayedonourstatevisitin2022.

then,asinourearliervisits,wereceivedawarmwelcomefromthepeopleofyourcountry,ashaveothermembersofmyfamily,mostrecentlymygrandsonwilliamandhiswife.

yourvisittotheunitedkingdommarksthecontinueddeepeningoftherelationshipbetweenourcountries.

althoughthisisthefirststatevisitfromsingapore,youattendedboththeopeningceremoniesoftheolympicgamesinlondonin2022,andthecommonwealthgamesinglasgowearlierthisyear,andyourprimeministerhasvisitedtheunitedkingdomonmanyoccasions.

aswellasacommonheritage,ourcountriesshareawealthofcommoninterests.

astwooftheleadingfinancialservicescentresintheworld,wearesignificantinvestorsineachother’scountries.

ourinterestsalsoextendtodefenceandsecurity.

shipsoftheroyalnavyhavebeenregularvisitorstosingaporeandourarmedforceshaveservedtogetheronpeacekeepingoperationsaroundtheworld.

underpinningallthisisasharedbeliefinopennessandfreetrade,andaworldfoundedonjustice,fairnessandinternationallaw.

mr.president,yourvisitisanopportunitytocelebratethelinksbetweenourtwocountries,developedoveralmosttwocenturies.

butitisalsoachancetohighlightcommonfutureinterests,especiallyineducation,researchandinnovation,thebuildingofculturaltiesandthedeepeningofthebondsbetweenourpeople.

theplacesyouwillvisitduringyourstayreflectbothourcommonheritageandourfuturepriorities.

forexample,itwaskewgardensthatsuppliedthefirstrubberseedlingstobecultivatedinthesingaporebotanicgardensinthe1870s.

andtodayimperialcollegeishelpingtotrainanewgenerationofsingaporeandoctors,justoneofmanyimportantpartnershipsthatitandotheru.k.universitiesarebuildingwithsingapore.

iampleasedtonotethat,inhonourofyourvisit,theroyalcommonwealthsocietyofsingaporeistobere-established;andthatthere-foundedsocietywillfosternewscholarshipstotheu.k.forsingaporeans.

andontheinternationalstage,throughourrespectivemembershipoftheeuropeanunionandtheassociationofsoutheastasiannations,andourcollectivemembershipofthecommonwealth,thereisthescopetopursuecommonvaluesandinterests,toourmutualbenefit.

mr.president,nextyearsingaporemarksanimportantmilestoneinitsremarkablehistory,the50thanniversaryofindependence.

itisapleasuretocelebratethatupcominggoldenanniversarywithyouthisevening.

lookingbackathalfacenturyofcooperation,andaheadtonewchaptersinourstory,itisclearthatourcountriesremainfirmfriends.

ihavenodoubtthatbymaintaininglongstandingcommitmentstoopenness,fairnessandenterprise,thisfriendshipwillnotonlybesustainedbutwillflourishandthrive.

whatwereyourmostmemorablemomentsof2022?forme,fourmomentsinparticularstoodout.

thefirstwason29march,whenwesentoffourfoundingprimeministermrleekuanyew.singaporeanslinedthestreetstobidhimafinalfarewell.therainwaspouring.astheguncarriageleftparliamenthouse,peopleshoutedhisname.iwasdeeplymovedtoseeeveryone’sfaces–drenched,grieving,butnotdowncast.wewereonepeople,gratefulforwhatourpioneershadachieved,resolvedtotakesingaporefurtherforward.

thesecondmomentwastheweekendof4july.overthreedays,iattendedfiveevents–ansg50catholicmass;thejubileedayofprayerorganisedbyprotestantchurches;aharmonyindiversityconcertorganisedbythetaoistfederationandnewcreationchurch;andtwoiftars–oneinal-ansarmosque,andanotherorganisedbyjalankayugrassrootsorganisationsaspartofaracialharmonynight.together,theeventsreflectedthediversityofoursociety,ourracialandreligiousharmony,andthesingaporeidentitywhichwehavebuiltoverthepast50years.

mythirdmomentwason9august,whenwecelebratedourgoldenjubileeatthepadang.itwasnotjustthescaleofthemobilecolumnandfly-past,butthesingaporestorytoldthroughthelivesofordinarysingaporeanspastandpresent.thatiswhywhenourpioneersoldiersmarchedpast,wegavethemourloudestcheer.

schoolchildreninledcostumesputupanenergeticandspectacularperformancetoendtheshowonahighnote.theyremindedmewhywearebuildingsingaporeandgavemeconfidencethattheycanchasetheirownrainbowsandtakesingaporehigherandfurther.

thefourthmomentwason11september,pollingdayofthegeneralelections.whichdirectionwouldsingaporego?whichteamwouldwechoosetoleadusforward?

astheresultscamein,ifeltgratifiedandhappythatvotershaddeliveredabigwinforsingapore.wewereunitedinourdesiretosecureoursharedfuture,toachievethebestforsingapore.asijoinedoursupportersattoapayohstadiumthatnight,itookaphotoofasupporterwhohadbroughtherbabyalongtosharethishistoricmoment.itencapsulatedwhattheelectionwasabout–ourpeopleandourfuture.

whydidifindthesefourmomentsmemorable?

becausetheyshowedtheworld–andourselves–whatadeterminedandunitedpeoplecando;whysingaporeisashiningreddot.despitethethreatsofisisandjihadistterrorism,whenothersocietiesaretroubledbyintoleranceandracialtensions,hereinsingaporewerejoiceinourmulti-racialharmony.whereothercountriesaremiredinpoliticalgridlockandpessimisticforthenextgeneration,weinsingaporeareunited,hopefulandconfidentaboutourfuture.

butmostofall,theseweremomentswhenwecametogether,andtookresponsibilityforoneanother.wewept,wesang,wecelebrated,webondedtogether,andemergedstrongerasoneunitedpeople.

assg50ends,thenextchapterofthesingaporestorybegins.weliveinaverydifferentworldfromourpioneersfiftyyearsago.yes,wehavemanymoreopportunitiesintheglobalisedworld,butwealsofacefiercer
