Andwhynot?Societyhasalwaysrewardeditstopentertainerslavishly.ThegreatdaysofHollywoodhavebecomelegendary:famousstarsenjoyedfame,wealthandadulationonanunprecedentedscale.Bytoday’sstandards,theexcessesofHollywooddonotseemquitesospectacular.Asinglegramophonerecordnowadaysmayearnmuchmoreinroyaltiesthanthefilmsofthepasteverdid.Thecompetitionforthetitle‘TopofthePops’isfierce,buttherewardsaretrulycolossal.

Itisonlyrightthatthestarsshouldbepaidinthisway.Don’tthetopmeninindustryearnenormoussalariesfortheservicestheyperformtotheircompaniesandtheircountries?Popstarsearnvastsumsinforeigncurrency–oftenmorethanlargeindustrialconcerns–andthetaxmancanonlybegratefulfrotheirmassiveannualcontributionstotheexchequer.Sowhowouldbegrudgethemtheirrewards?
