ObtainingConferenceFormatsCommonTypesofConferencePresentationsoralpresentationposterpresentationcolloquiumsymposiumworkshopIReflectionsandPracticeII2Aftercompletingthissection,youwillbeabletolistthetypesofconferencepresentationformats;compareandcontrastthetypesofpresentationformats;explainfactorsthatshouldbeconsideredwhenchoosingaconferencepresentationformat.3PartICommonTypesofConferencePresentations41.CommonTypesofConferencePresentationsWhenpreparingtoattendanacademicconference,youhavetoconsidertheformatsofthepresentation.Infact,thetypeofformatsdependsonwhetherornotyousubmittedaproposalthatwasalreadyacceptedbytheconferenceoryouwereinvitedtoparticipateinsomespecificpresentationbytheconferenceorganizers.Theformatsforthepresentationsofresearchfindingsatacademicconferencesarevariedaccordingtothetypeofthepresentations.51.CommonTypesofConferencePresentationsThecommontypesinclude:oralpresentation,posterpresentationcolloquiumsymposiumworkshop61.1OralpresentationsOralpresentationsaregenerallyconsideredpreferablecomparedtoposterpresentations,forquitealotofpeoplefeelthatoralpresentationsaremoreprestigiousandoffermorecachethanposterpresentations.Oralpresentationsaregenerallyshorttalksorpaneldiscussionsdeliveredbyoneormoreindividualstoaroomofinterestedmeetingattendees.Dependingontheconference,thespeaker(s)mayreadapreparedspeechorthespeakermaymoreinformallydiscusshis/herworkusingvisualaids,suchasaPowerPointpresentationusingalaptopcomputer.Averybrieftimeisallottedforindividualoralpresentations,typicallywithin15to30minutes.Consequently,thepresentationmustbeclearlyandsuccinctlypresented.Oralpresentationsmayfurtherdividedintotwokinds,individualpresentationsandpaneldiscussions.7①IndividualpresentationsIndividualpresentationscanbecontributedorinvitedtalks,whichoftenlast15to30minutesinlengthandleaveashorttime,ifany,forquestionsfromtheaudience.8①IndividualpresentationsAsforcontributedpresentations,anyonewhosubmitsaproposaloranabstract,asrequiredbytheconference,ispotentiallyeligibletodeliveracontributedtalk.Asforinvitedtalks,theconferenceorganizersinvitetheexpertsinaspecificareatosharetheirrecentwork.It’scommonthatthecontributedpresentationsareofshorterdurationthantheinvitedtalks,butgenerallytherearenosubstantivedifferencesotherwise.“Contributed”simplymeansthatyou,asaconferee,submittedyourpaperforconsiderationofpresentationasversus“invited”,whichmeanstheconferenceinvitesyoutospeak.Infact,invitedspeakersmustalsosubmittheirproposalsorabstractsfortheconference.9①IndividualpresentationsAsforthebenefitstheinvitedspeakersreceive,thatdependsonthespecificmeetingsandthemeetingorganizers.Atsomeconferences,invitedspeakersmaybeofferedfreeorreducedregistration,lodging,travel,etc.However,therearecasesthattheinvitedspeakermaycomewithnoneoftheseperks.Thereforeifyouare“invited”someday,don’tmakeassumptionsforthebenefits.Itwouldbeclevertogotoasktheconferenceorganizerswhatservices,ifany,theconferencewillprovidetoyou.Quitefrequently,simplybeinginvitedtotheconferenceisconsideredasignificanthonortotheresearchers.10Generallythecontributedpresentershavepreparedtheirconferencepaperbeforetheirpresentationandtheirpresentationattheconferenceistypicallyamorefocused,narrowerversionoftheiroverallproject.Paperpresentationsareassignedtotheappropriatesessions.Thesesessionsgenerallyinclude:11ThemedsessionThemedsessionsprimarilyincludecompletedresearchorscholarlywork.Thepresentationswillbegroupedbytopicsorthemesintosessionsthatincludeseveralrelatedpresentations.Thisfacilitatesaudienceattendanceandtopicorganizationattheconference.Roundtablesession

Roundtablesessionsallowthepresentersanopportunitytointeractandconversewiththeaudience.Thepresentersareassignedtoatableinaconferenceroomandthoseinterestedattendeesmayjointhemattheirtable.Thesesessionsaretypicallybestforpositionpapers,policyanalyses,andothertypesoftopicsthatbenefitfromextendeddiscussiontime.12②PaneldiscussionsInpaneldiscussions,twoormorespeakerswillpresentdifferentaspects,perspectivesorthoughtsonaparticulartopic,aresearchproblem,oraquestion.Eachspeakerwillhaveanopportunitytopresenttheirinformationandwhenallthespeakersarefinished,typicallythereistimefordiscussion.Unlessabsolutelynecessaryforthetopic,avoidPowerPointpresentationsandslides,fortheytendtoslowdownthediscussion,keepaudienceinvolvementlowandoftenboretheaudiences.Useasmallnumberofslidesonlywheninformationordiagramsneedtobepresentedthatcannoteasilybeexplainedinwordsalone.131.2PosterpresentationsPosterpresentationsarevaluableopportunitiesforalargenumberofconferenceattendeestopresenttheirworkintheformofvisualposterpresentation.141.2PosterpresentationsPosterpresentersareusuallyprovidedasignificantamountofspace(3’×4’ormore)onwhichtofullydisplaytheirresearchinavisuallyattractiveandprofessionalway.Theposterpresentersgenerallyhavetheopportunitytosharetheirresearchworkoveranextendedperiodoftime,lastinganhourormore,evenawholedayatsomeconferences!Thisallowstheposterpresenterstodescribeanddiscusstheirresearchingreaterdetailthanwouldbepossibleinanoralpresentationtothosewhoaregenuinelyinterestedintheirresearch.Alsotheposterpresenterscanreceivevaluablefeedbackfromtheattendeesonthespot.151.3ColloquiumColloquium(pl.colloquiumsorcolloquia),fromLatin,meaning“totalk”,isanacademicconferenceormeeting,wherepeopletendtotalk.161.3ColloquiumThespecialiststheredeliveraddressesonatopicoronrelatedtopicsandthenanswerquestionsrelatingtothem.Thistypeofconferencesessionoftenlastsaround90minutesandentails5ormorepresenterswhoareproposingpapersonthesametopicorthesametheme.Allpresenterswillspeak;eachapproximately15minutesandtherewillbeadditionaltimefordiscussionandquestions.Thesesessionshaveamorenarrowfocusandthereforeattractattendeeswithagenuineinterestinthetopic.171.4SymposiumAsymposiumisatypeofconferenceorsessionthatfocusesononeparticulartopic.Itisoftenacollectionofpapersfromanumberofcontributors.Eachcontributorwillhaveanopportunitytopresentandatimefordiscussion.Thistypeofsessionisvaluablewhenmultipleperspectivesonaparticularsubjectmaybeofinteresttotheaudienceandcanbeputtogetherinonesession.Asymposiumisalsoatimefornetworkingandcollaborationwithpeersandcolleaguessincethesesessionsareoftencomprisedofexpertsinthefiel
