“heads”knownformakingbaddecisions?

Whydoes“groupthink”immediatelymeanineffectivenessandmistakes?

ThesequestionsareansweredinafascinatingnewbookcalledWiser:GettingBeyondGroupthinktoMakeGroupsSmarter,writtenbyCassR.Sunstein,aformerWhiteHouseofficial,andReidHastie,anacademicspecializedinthepsychologyofdecisionmaking.Buildingontheircombinedexperiencesandresearch,SunsteinandHastieanalyzewhatgoeswrongingroupdecision-making,andthenofferclear-outsolutionstoovercometheseproblems.

Groupdecision-makinginvolvesdiscussionsamongmembersofagroup,eachwiththeirownskills,experience,ideasandinformation.Unfortunately,astheauthorsexplain,therearetwotypesofinfluenceongroupmembers—informationalsignalsandsocialpressures—whichskew(扭曲)thediscussions.Informationalsignalscausepeopletokeepinformationtothemselveswhenitdisagreeswithinformationfromothers,especiallyleaders.Socialpressurescausepeopletokeepinformationtothemselvestoavoidpunishmentfromleaderswhoaredenied.

Theseinfluencesleadtofourproblems,theauthorswrite:Insteadofcorrectingtheerrorsoftheirmembers,groupsactuallyexpandthoseerrors;cascadeeffects(联级效应)takeoverwhenthegroupfollowswhomeverspokefirstorloudest;groupsbecomemoreextremeintheirideas,astheinternaldiscussionsstrengthentheirpredisposed(预先有倾向的)thoughts;andgroupsfocusonsharedinformationinsteadofunsharedinformation.

Havinglaidoutthecoreproblems,theauthorsoffersolutions.Theybeginwithalistofmethodsaimedathandlingthefourcoreproblems,suchas:

Groupsuccessshouldberewarded.Groupmembersmustunderstandthatifthegroupisright,everyonebenefits;thiswillencouragethemtoensurethattheyfindtherightanswerinsteadofpushingtheirownideas.
