It’snosecretthatthesecondquarterof2020wasaturningpointforstreamingTV.Streamingacceleratedtoextremeheightsduetogloballockdownsduringtheearlydaysofthepandemic.Thesetrendshavebecomepermanent,andstreamingisnowastandardfixtureinconsumers’homes.

Onthesecondanniversaryofthequarterthatchangedtheworld,wecontinuetoseeyearoveryearstreamingviewingtimeincreaseonaglobalscale.Allregionsoftheworldsawincreasedviewingtime,althoughnotasdrasticallyasinpreviousquarters.Andwhilegrowthisgoodfortheindustry,othermetricsshowthatstreamingsuccessisbecomingmorecomplicated.

Highlightsinclude:

•Streaminggrowthcontinues.Globalstreamingviewingtimewasup14%.AsiaandLATAMchartedthelargestgrowthat90%and70%,respectively.EvenNorthAmerica,themostmaturestreamingmarketingintheworld,increasedviewingby5%,apercentageidenticaltothefirstquarterof

2022.

•Bitratecontinuestoriseglobally.Thisphenomenonhashappenedattheexpenseofvideostarttime(VST).BitratewasthesoleQoEmetricthatwasupconsistentlyacrossallregions,allscreentypes,andalltopdevices.

•Bigscreensremainthestreamingdeviceofchoice.Infact,theycapturenearly77%ofallstreamingviewinghoursworldwide.SmartTVspostedthehighestincreaseinviewinghoursyearoveryearforalldevicetypes.

•AndroidTVviewingissurging.AndroidTVsareatop-fivedeviceinfiveofthesixmajorstreamingTVmarketsandsawan81.9%increaseinviewinghoursyearoveryear.AndroidTVCTVshaveenabledthesmallerOEMstocompetemoreeffectivelyagainstSamsungandLG.

•AndroidPhonesrivaliPhoneviewing.Thereislessthan3%differenceinshareoftotalviewinghoursonmobiledevicesbetweeniPhoneandAndroidphonesglobally.WhileiPhonestillleads,Androidphoneincreasedtheirviewinghoursatamuchfasterrate24.9%(Android)vs15.9%(iPhone)yearoveryear.

•Rokuremainsthemostpopulardeviceintheworld.ThisisduetomassiveNorthAmericanmarketshare,withRokuclaiminga23.1%shareofalldevicesgloballyand30.5%ofallbig-screenviewing.

•Gamingconsolescontinuetoseedeclineinstreaminghours.ThisisdespiteongoinghardwareadvantagesandconsistentimprovementinQoEmetrics.

•Adsareheretostay.Asstreamingservicesaroundtheworldcontinuetoannouncead-supportedplans,existingstreamingprovidersincreasedtheiradimpressionsby25%andreducedmissed-adopportunitiesby35%.

•Streamingpublishersareleaningintosocialmedia.Theycontinuedtopushfora360degreemarketingapproachastheyincreasedcontentoutputonsocialmediasignificantlycomparedtothepreviousyear.

Streamingrose14%globally,themostyearoveryearsincethefirstquarterof2021.Asiasawthelargestyearoveryearincreaseat90%.LATAMsawthesecondbiggestincreaseat70%,followedbyOceaniaat26%andAfricaat22%.

NorthAmerica,whichhasseensingle-digitgrowthforthepastyear,continuedthattrendwithamodest5%increaseinstreamingviewinghours.Europewasupslightlycomparedtolastquarterat20%.

Theseyearoveryearnumberscometwoyearsafterthelargestincreaseinstreaminghoursgloballyeverrecordedduringthebeginningofthepandemic.TheseconsistentgrowthnumbersinplaceslikeAmericaandEuropeshowamaturingmarketplacewhileAsia,LATAM,Africa,andOceaniaprovidemassivegrowthopportunities.

GlobalQualityAnalysis

Qualitymetricswereamixedbag.Whileimprovementsweremadeacrosstheboardforallregionsinbufferingandbitrate,itwastheoppositeforvideostarttime(VST).

Birateshowedsubstantialimprovementsinallregions.Oceanialedthecategorywithanimpressive10.68followedbyLATAMwith9.54andEuropeat7.58.Asia,whichboaststhelargestpercentageofmobilestreaminghours,hadthelowestaveragebitrateat5.45.

Bitrate’sincreasedidn’tcomewithoutacost.Onaverage,VSTincreasedinallregionsoutsideNorthAmericawhereitsawadecreaseof-1.2%to4.2seconds.Europeprovidedthefastestvideostarttimeat4.13seconds,followedbyNorthAmericaat4.2.AfricaandLATAMviewersdealwiththelongestVSTat7.51and6.86secondsrespectively.Bufferingalsosawnoticeableimprovementsacrosstheboard.NorthAmericaandOceaniatiedforlowestbufferingrateat.17%whileAsiashowedthebiggestimprovementbringingtheirbufferingratedown-68.7%to.65%.Africaimprovedthesecondmostdown-35.4%yearoveryearbutstillleadallregionsat.73%.

Theaverageminutesperplaygloballywas20.8,bestedbyEurope,whichpostedacategorybestof22.7min/play.NorthAmericacameinat22.3,andOceaniaat22.

HowtheWorldStreams

Themajorityoftheworld’sstreaminghourshappenonbigscreens,buteveryregiondoesitalittlebitdifferently.Globally,SmartTVs,ConnectedTVdevicesandGamingConsolestotaled76.7%ofallviewinghours.Mobilephonescapturedthethird-largestsharebydeviceat11.3%globally,followedbydesktopsat7.1%,gamingconsolesat6.8%,andtabletsat4.8%.

NorthAmericatalliedthelargestshareofbig-screenviewingat82.1%withbothSmartTVsandConnectedTVdevicestiedformarketshareat37.6%.NorthAmericaalsoboastedthehighestshareofviewinghoursofconnectedTVDevicesandthesmallestshareofdesktopstreaming.

LATAMrankedsecondinbig-screenTVviewing,withSmartTVscapturingthelargestshareat43.3%.Interestingly,LATAMrankedlastamongconnectedTVdeviceviewingsharewhencomparingallregions,withashareof22.7%.LATAMalsorankedaheadoftheglobalaverageforshareonmobiledevicesanddesktopcomputersat15.7%and10.9%respectively.

Europe’sbiggestshareofviewingoccurredonconnectedTVdevices,whichchartedat32.8%.Theregionalsostreamedmoreontabletsthananyotherregion,withanindustryhighof9.5%shareofviewing.

Oceaniawastheonlyregionthathaddouble-digitshareinfivedifferentscreen-typecategories.Oceaniawasalsotheonlyregiontohavemorethan10%oftheirviewinghoursingameconsolesat11.3%.

Africahadoneofthemostevenlydistributedscreenshareresults,withanear-equalshareformobilephonesanddesktopcomputersat19%.ConnectedTVdeviceswerethemostpopulardeviceforstreamingintheregionat31%share.Notably,Africahadthelargestshareofstreamingondesktopcomputersat18.6%comparedtoallotherregions.

Asia,mostnotably,wastheonlyregionwherethemajorityofstreamingdidnotoccuronbig-screendevices.Mobilephones,tablets,anddesktopsaccountedfor54.7%ofallstreaminghoursintheregion,whichincludedanindustryhighof41.8%ofstreaminghoursonmobiledevices.Asiaalsoaccountedforanindustrylowof20.4%ofstreaminghoursfromSmartTVs.

FollowingnotfarbehindSmartTVsweremobilephones,upthesecond-mostgloballyyearoveryearat23.9%,drivenbystronggrowthinAsiaandLATAM.ConnectedTVdevicesgrew7.8%,drivenbystronggrowthinAsiaandLATAMandmoderategrowthinOceaniaandEurope.Interestingly,Africa,whichgarneredthehighestshareofviewingfromconnectedTVdevices,onlysaw2.8%growthinthatareaasmanyAfricanssubstantiallyincreasedtheirtimespentstreamingonSmartTVs,mobilephones,andtablets.

Tabletschartedmoderategrowthgloballywitha6.5%increaseyearoveryearledbyAfrica,Asia,andLATAM.DesktopsandgamingconsolesbothsawdeclinesgloballyasNorthAmericashiftedawayfromdevicesthatrequiremorestepstostream.NorthAmericawasn’taloneinitsshiftawayfromgamingconsoles.AfricaandEuropebothspentlesstimeusingthosedevicestostreamcomparedtoayearagowithdeclinesat-5%.Ultimately,consumersareoptingfordevicesthatprovideincreasedconveniencewhenstreamingandOEMsarecapitalizingbyprovidingmoreTVswithbuilt-instreamingcapabilitiesatlowpricepoints.

Whenanalyzingscreen-typeQoE,SmartTVsledthepack.SmartTVssawthelargestincreaseinbitrateforallscreentypesat15.1%andprovidedthehighest-qualitystreamingexperiencewithanaveragebitrateof9.76.Thisincreasehasbeendrivenbypublishersrespondingtocustomerdemandforhigherqualitybyreleasingmoreoftheircontentwithallthebellsandwhistles,suchas4K,HDR,andspatialaudio.Insomecases,theseincreasesinbitratehaveoutpacedtheperformanceofthehardwareandledtodegradationinotherexperiencemetricssuchasvideostartfailures,starttimeandbuffering.Thesedegradationsincreasetheriskofapoorstreamingexperiencetoanyonewhoexperiencesthem.

Bigscreens,whichincludesgamingconsoles,CTVdevicesandlongest-averageminutesperplay,witheachhoveringinthehigh20s.Tablets,gamingconsoles,anddesktopsawunanimousincreasesinallQoEmetricswhilemobilephonesandconnectedTVdevicessawimprovementsinVSF,buffering,andbitrate.IncreasesinVSTwasthemostconsistentproblemseenacrossmostscreens.

ToEachTheirOwnDevices

Whenitcomestototalglobalstreaminghours,thereisnodevicethatcomesclosetoRoku.ItsmassiveNorthAmericanmarketsharefirmlyplaceditatthetopoftheglobaldeviceleaderboard.However,itisn’tatop-fivedeviceinanyothermarket.

AmazonFirecapturedthesecondspotontheglobaldeviceleaderboardat12.1%withatop-fivedevicerankinginEurope,NorthAmerica,andAsia.SamsungTVcapturedthethird-moststreaminghoursgloballywitha10.4%shareofhoursviewed.TheSmartTVhaswideglobalpenetration,takingatop-fivespotinallregionsexceptAsia.SamsungTVwasalsotheonlydevicetobethenumber-onedeviceinmorethanoneregion.WhileonlyatabouthalftheviewinghoursofSamsung,LGTV,inthe6thplaceglobally,wasatop5devicein3majormarkets.

Formostregions,livingroomdevicesdominatetherankingsofengagementshare—exceptforinAsia.AndroidPhoneranked#1byawidemargininAsia,whereasnophoneishigherthan#4foranyotherregion.However,itwasn’tjustAndroidphonesthatfoundsuccessinAsia.Android,asanoperatingsystemformobiledevices,STBs,andConnectedTVs,hasmorethan50%oftheviewinghoursrecordedinAsiainQ2of2022.Further,morethan20%oftheviewingshareinAfricaand25%ofLATAMwasfromAndroiddevices.AndroidTVswerealsothetopdeviceinOceaniaat13.9%.

Itwasn’tjustAndroidthatfoundsuccessglobally.Appledevicescaptured3ofthetop10spotswithiPhonesin5that5.8%,AppleTVin9that3.6%andAppleiPadin10that3.3%.

Linuxset-topboxes,whichincludeavarietyofLinux-basedconnectedTVdevices,werethenumber-onedeviceinAfricaata18.3%shareintheregionfollowedbyPCsata14.6%share.TheirusageofPCsforstreamingwasmorethananyotherregionintheworld.

LATAM’stopdevicesfirmlyplantthemaheadofallotherregionsinSmartTVstreamingviewingshare.Theirtop3devicesSamsungTV,AndroidTV,andLGTVtotalednearly45%ofallstreaminghoursintheregion.
