Ahandfulofcash-richcompaniesareconsolidatingpowerinthetechnologyindustry,usingtheirwealthtoexpandintonewbusinessesandmakingitharderforsmallandmidsizecompetitorstobreakthrough.Whytheindustryisevolvingthiswayisrootedinbalancesheets.Overthepasttwoyears,AppleInc.,OracleCorp.,GoogleInc.,MicrosoftCorp.andsixotherlargetechcompanieshavegenerated$68.5billioninnewcash,comparedwithjust$13.5billionfortheother65techcompaniesintheS&P500Indexcombined,accordingtoaWallStreetJournalanalysisofdataprovidedbyCapitalIQ.
