Sequoyahdecidedtotryadifferentmethod.Hebegantodev

elopsymbolstostandforthesounds,orsyllables(音

节),thatmadeupwords.Twelveyearslater,hecompleteda

systemofwriting86differentsymbols.Eachonestoodforad

ifferentsyllableintheCherokeelanguage.Thesymbolscould

easilybeputtogethertoformwords.SoonthousandsofChe

rokeewereabletoreadandwriteintheirownlanguage.

Sequoyah’sworkdidnotstopthere,however.Hehelpedtofo

undaprintshopandbeganpublishingabilingualnewspaperi

nbothCherokeeandEnglish.Theshopalsoprintedbookstra

nslatedfromEnglishintoCherokee.Inlateryears,Sequoyah

alsobecameapoliticalleaderamongtheCherokee.

Sequoyahdiedin1843,butmanyCherokeeoftodaystilluse

thealphabetheinvented.Thankstohim,theCherokeenowh
