Ethnographyisthestudyofaparticularhumansocietyortheprocess
ofmakingsuchastudy.ContemporaryethnographyisbasedaImostentirely
onfieldworkandrequiresthecompIeteimmersionoftheanthropologist
inthecultureandeverydayIifeofthepeopIewhoarethesubjectof
hisstudy.Ethnography,byvirtueofitsintersubjectivenature,is
necessarilycomparative.Giventhattheanthropologistinthefield
necessarilyretainscertainculturalbiases,hisobservationsand
descriptionsmust,toacertaindegree,becomparative.Thusthe
formulatingofgeneralizationsaboutcultureandthedrawingof

ModernanthropologistsusuallyidentifytheestabIishmentof
ethnographyasaprofessionalfieldwiththepioneeringworkofthe
PoIish-bornBritishanthropoIogistBronisIawMaIinowskiintheTrobriand
IslandsofMelanesia.Ethnographicfieldworkhadsincebecomeasortof
