Introduction

Oneofthemainchallengesfacedbyfoodandbeverageindustryistoimprovethediningexperienceofcustomersbyefficientlymanagingorderregistryandin-timedelivery.Traditionally,ordersaretakenmanuallyviarestaurantstaffwhereeverysinglesustenanceoffoodorderrequestisnoteddownonapaperandthesamefoodorderticketishandedovertokitchenstaffforprocessing.Aftertheorderisprocessed,theservertakesittothecustomers’table,andafterthemeal,thecustomerspaythebillandclosethebusinesscycle.Inthisdigitalera,thistraditionalmethodfacessomelimitationssuchasdifficultyinfoodordertracking:asallordersaresubmittedtokitchenstaffonapieceofpaper,thesequenceofthefoodorderticketmightbeinterchangedwithothertickets,difficultyinupdatingandmaintainingprintedmenucards,difficultyinmaintainingefficientrestaurantstaff(bothkitchenandserving),etc.Eliminationoftraditionalmethodlimitationscanhelpinbettercustomersatisfactionanddiningexperience.

Thispaperproposesanautomatedfoodselectionandorderingsystemthatreducesthetimebetweenorderingandservingdishestocustomers.Thissystemwillprovideanexperienceofconveniencetotherestaurantemployeeswhiletheyareondutyaswellastheconsumerwhodine-inattherestaurant,thusleadingtomorecustomersatisfactionwhichwillhelpinimprovingbusinessconsecutively.Theproposedsys-temisfullysecureandusesQRcodeandUIDverificationforplacingtheorderforaspecificrestaurant.Everytableintherestaurantwillbeequippedwithelectronicmenufacilitywhichwillbeuser-friendly,andthecustomerwillbeabletoselect,placeandpaythroughthisinteractiveinterface.Thisprocessingmethodofplacing

RelatedWork

Theuseoftouchtechnologyfortheremoteorderingsystemremainsthebaselineforallthesepointofsale(POS)systemsthatarebeingusedforsuchpurpose[

].Theideaistoenablethecustomertoselectandorderitemsdirectlythroughthedeviceswhichareeitherself-ownedorprovidedtothemtotheirseatswithintheremotelocationsthataredeliverable.Oneoftheissuesthatwerefacedwasthatapersoncanmakeabogusorderforsomeothertablenumberwhilebeingthereattherestaurantorthroughthewebsitebeingnotevenpresentattherestaurant.Theuseofshortmessageserviceasavalidationkeyforeveryorder[

]andforwebsitetheuseofaspecificUIDensuresthateveryorderplacedisplacedwhilethecustomerwaspresentattherighttablebyprovidingareceiptoforderintheend.Thefutureofthisideaalsoincludestheuseofnear-fieldcommunication(NFC)afeaturethatisnowbecomingpopularinthesmartphonesandtabletsforfurtherincreasingtheuserinteractionoftheplatform[

].MostofsuchPOSservices’providersensurethattherestaurantsarewellequippedwiththelatestPDAandwirelessLANsystemsalongwithexpensivetouchscreensforthisservicetobeused[

],butwhatmakesusdifferentfromthemisanysmartphoneinwhichtheappisinstalledorthewebsiteisworkingcanorder,andtheorderplacedwillreachdirectlytothecentraliseddatabasewhichwillbeprocessedanddirectlysenttothekitchenforthepreparationandthuswillreducethelabourandthechancesoferrors[

].Oursystemalsostandsoutofallothersuchservicesbecauseapartfromprovidingallthefeaturesthatotherservicesprovide,italsohasaoneofitskindfeaturestomakethingseasierforthecustomerbyscanningtheQRcodeanddirectlybeingdirectedtothehierarchalinteractivemenubecauseapartfromprovidingthebesthospitalityservicesthatareindemandwithmoreandmorerestaurantsbeingopeningup[

],itisalsonecessarytodosointheminimumamountoftime.Thus,intoday’sworldoftechnology,suchaservicetoprovidecustomersatisfactioncanbearevolutioninfoodorderingbusiness.

Theseapproachesincludesolvingtheissueusingembeddedsystemsandmicro-controllersthatmakeupthetransferandreceivingmodule,andthedataistransferredbymicrocontrollertothecentralPCusingaUSB[

].Thepersonaldigitalassistants(PDAs)whicharethehand-helddevicesareevenprovidedbytherestaurants.Theslowfunctionality,expenditures,noreal-timesupportandthelessornoexperienceoftheusersofusingthatdevicemakeitlesssuitable[

].OneapproachwastousetheBluetoothsystemfortheorderingpurposebutalthoughcheapandabilityto

multipledevicesbutitslowdatatransferrates,poorandshort-rangeconnectionandabilitytocommunicatewithonedeviceatonceisathreattotheservice[

].Thefoodandhospitalityindustryhaseventriedtousetherobotstoprovidetheservice,butthecostsandtheslowspeedsplusalowuser-friendlyinteractioncomealongwithit[

].Near-fieldcommunication(NFC)isanupcomingtechnologywhichasalreadysaidwealsoplantoincludeinoursystemwhichhasattractedthefoodindustry,andmethodshavebeendiscussedinthescienceanddevelopmentcommunityaboutmakingitasuccess[

].Anotherinterestingapproachthatwecameacrosswasbygettingtheupdatesasnotificationsbysendingashortmessageservice(SMS).ThisapproachcomeswithaUIforthecustomeraswellastherestaurantandtalksabouttheeaseoforderingandknowingthestatusoforderusingaSMS[

ProposedModel

Theproposedfoodorderingmodelisbroadlydividedintotwomainmodules,namelyrestaurantstaff(management)andcustomers.Inrestaurantstaffmodule,theadminwillbeabletoupdateandmakechangestotheirfoodandbeveragemenuinformation.Theycanalsogenerateorviewreportsofthebusinessforthedayormonth.Incustomermodule,thecustomerwillbeabletobrowse,selectfoodorbeverageitemalongwithquantityandcanfurtherprocessitforordering.Themostimportantfunctioninthismoduleistoallowthecustomerstoprocesstheirbillingstatementandtomaketheirpaymentafterhavingtheirmeals.TheoverallinteractionbetweenmanagementandcustomerisshowninFig.

.Thisautomatedfoodselectionandorderingsystemcanbeusedontwoplatforms,namelyWeb-basedandapp-based.Thecustomerscanuseanyofthetwosystemstoorderfood.Boththeplatforms

requirecustomertoenterUIDfollowedbyscanningofQRcodetoaccessrestaurantmenufororderingitems.

AQRcodeforeachcustomerisissuedwhocomesintotherestaurant.Thisstandardisedbarcodetagmustbeutilisedonceinatime.Thecustomerscansthisstandardisedbarcodeandestablishesconnectionswiththesite,andisprovidedaccesstothemenuwithpicture,costandfoodingredientsoftherestaurant.Customerscanmaketheirselectionwithquantityandplacetheirorder.Anotherprovisionofplacingtheorderiswiththeuseofsmartphonesinwhichafour-digitnumberismentionedfororderingwithoutaQRcode.Thisway,customercanorderbyselectingthetableonwhichthecustomerissittingandbyenteringthefour-digitcode.Itisnotablethatthisfour-digitcodeissingleuseandisreissuedforeachcustomer.

Thecustomerscancheckoutthroughtheseplatformsafterpayingthebillandregisteringtheirvaluablefeedback.TheappusersmusthaveFOODIEappinstalledintheirsmartphonespriortoenteringUID.Web-baseduserscandirectlyaccessthewebsitetoenterUIDandorderfood.

Restaurantsefficiencyandaccuracywillbeimprovedwiththismodelbyelimi-nationofmanualorderingsystemandbillingsystem.Thismodelaimstodevelopanorderingsystemparticularlyforsmall–mediumenterprisefoodandbeverages(F&B)industriestoeaseoutthepressurefromserversandhelprestaurantsinsmoothandsimplifiedoperationswhichinturncanimprovetheoveralldiningexperienceofcustomers(Fig.

40.2

).

ThiscomparisontablewasdevelopedbythoroughlycomparingandevaluatingthefamousfoodorderingplatformsFoodpanda,Swiggy,ZomatoandourdevelopedapplicationFoodiesidebysideandevaluatingtheirprosandconstoidentifywhereourapplicationstandsinfrontoftheseservices.

Conclusion

Thepresentedautomatedfoodorderingsystemintegratesallthefeaturesandfunc-tionalitiesintotheappandthewebsiteconsideringmarketcompetition,customerandmanagementusage.Thissystemprovidesfeaturesoffeedbackandwirelesscom-munication.However,weareawareofthemarketcompetitionandworkingtowardsanyscopeofimprovement.Thetechnologiesaregettingupdateddaybyday,andweknowthatourapplicationshouldhavethelatestfeaturesandelementsintegrated.Security,verificationandaccessmanagementoftheusersandrestaurantsarethemostimportantaspectsforthiswork.WehaveusedUIDsandQRcodestomakeusercredentialsprivate.Asfaraswehaveresearched,wecanclaimthatthemainideaandconceptoftheappandthewebsiteisreallynewanduniqueforthemarketifdeployedandintegratedasdesired.Oncetheappalongwiththewebsitegetssomemoretimeandfinance,webelievethatwecanbuildanewfirst-of-its-kindonsitefoodorderingApplicationthatwouldhelpcustomersavealotoftime.
