Introduction
TheEnglishLanguageCurriculumStandards(ELCS)of2022isacomprehensiveandupdatedguidethatservesasaroadmapforEnglishlanguageteachingandlearninginChina.ItisintendedtoguideeducatorsindevelopingEnglishlanguagecompetenciesamongstudents.TheELCScoversfivemajorcomponents,includinglanguageknowledge,languageskills,cultureknowledge,strategies,andassessment.ThisarticleprovidesabriefoverviewoftheELCSandsomeofitskeyfeatures.
LanguageKnowledge
LanguageknowledgeisacentralcomponentoftheELCSandcomprisessixsub-components,namelyphoneticsandphonology,vocabularyandgrammar,semanticsandpragmatics,writingandreading,translationandinterpretation,andmultimediaapplications.Giventhatlanguageknowledgeisthefoundationoflanguagelearning,theELCSemphasizesthedevelopmentoflearners'languagecompetenceinallaspects.Thisincludestheabilitytoarticulatesounds,recognizewords,comprehendmeanings,usegrammaticalstructurescorrectly,readandwritetexts,translateandinterprettextsbetweenEnglishandChinese,andusemultimediatechnologiestoenhancelanguagelearning.
LanguageSkills
ThedevelopmentoflanguageskillsisanothercriticalcomponentoftheELCS.Itincludesfoursub-components,namelylistening,speaking,reading,andwriting.AccordingtotheELCS,languageskillsaretheprimarymeansforlearnerstouselanguagetocommunicate.Therefore,thecurriculumstandardsemphasizethedevelopmentoflanguageskillsbyadoptingacommunicativeapproachtolanguagelearning.Thisemphasisissupportedbyaseriesofbenchmarksthatoutlinetheexpecteddevelopmentoflearners'skillsacrossdifferentstages.
CultureKnowledge
CultureknowledgeisanintegralpartoftheELCS.Itincludesfivesub-components,namelyknowledgeofEnglish-speakingcountries,interculturalcommunication,literature,mediaandpopularculture,andattitudesandvalues.Thecurriculumstandardshighlightthesignificanceofunderstandingcultureinlanguagelearning.ThisemphasisisreflectedinthevariousactivitiesandtasksthattheELCSproposes,whichaimtodeveloplearners'knowledgeandawarenessofEnglish-speakingcountries'culturesandvalues.
Strategies
ThedevelopmentoflearningstrategiesisanotherimportantcomponentoftheELCS.Itcomprisesthreesub-components,namelylearningstrategies,communicationstrategies,andcriticalthinkingskills.Thecurriculumstandardsstressthatlearnersneedtodevelopvariouslearningandcommunicationstrategies,suchasnote-taking,summarizing,andanalyzing,tofosterself-directedlearning.Moreover,learnersneedtohonetheircriticalthinkingskillstoevaluateandanalyzeinformationcritically.
Assessment
AssessmentisthefinalcomponentoftheELCS.Thecurriculumstandardsstresstheimportanceofassessmentforevaluatingtheeffectivenessofteachingandlearning.Itcomprisesthreesub-components,namelyformativeassessment,summativeassessment,andself-assessment.AccordingtotheELCS,formativeassessmentismainlyusedtohelplearnerstomonitortheirlearningprogress.Itservesasfeedbackforlearnerstoadjusttheirlearningstrategiescontinually.Summativeassessmentisusedtoassesslearners'overallperformanceattheendofacourseoraunittoevaluatetheirlearningoutcomes.Finally,self-assessmentenableslearnerstotakechargeoftheirlearningbyevaluatingtheirprogress.
