Thetwofungi,AspergillusterreusandEngyodontiumalbum,madeamealoftheplasticinthelabexperiments.Astheresearchersreported,between25and27percentofsamplesweredigestedafter90days,andtheplasticwascompletelybrokendownafter140days.

Morethan400microorganismshavesofarbeenfoundtodegradeplasticnaturally,withfungiattractingafairbitofattentionfortheirabilitytodegradeallsortsofman-madematerials.“Recentstudiessuggestsomefungimayevendegradesomeofthe‘foreverchemicals’likePFAS,buttheprocessisslowandnotyetwellunderstood,”explainsmicrobiologistDeeCarteroftheUniversityofSydney.
