Onecoldwinterday,adogwalkedtotheedgeofanicyriverinPoland.Nobodyknowsforsurewherethedogcamefromorwhathewas ngthere.Buthewasabouttohaveabigadventure.

Withoutwarning,theicethatthedogwasstandingonbrokeawayfromtheland.Thedogwassweptdowntheriveronasheetoficehalfthesizeofafootballfield.Thefrighteneddoglookedforawaytogetbacktotheshore,buthewastrappedontheice.Theriverwastoocoldforhimtoswimtosafety.

Somefirefighterssawthedogdriftingdowntheriverashepassedthroughtheircity.Theytriedtohelphim,buttheycouldn’treachhim.Thefirefighterscouldonlywatchastheicecarriedthedogfartherdowntheriver.

Forthreedays,thedogdrifteddowntheriveronhisraftofice.Hepassedthroughseveralmoretowns.Atleastoneothergroupofpeoplesawhimandtriedtohelphim.Buttheyweren’tabletoreachhim,either.

Eachday,thehungrydoggrewcolder,weaker,andmorescared.Hisiceraftwasslowlymeltingandbreakingupintohundredsofsmallerpieces.Bynow,thepiecehewasstandingonwasnotmuchlargerthanasmallbedroom.Ifheslippedoff,hemight etrappedunderoneofthemanychunksoficearoundhimanddrown.

Onthe day,thedogpassedthemouthoftheriverandwassweptoutintotheBalticSea.Hehadtraveledmorethan75 (120km)fromwherehebegan.Hewasmovingfartherawayfromlandandanyhopeofrescue.Thepieceoficehewasstandingonhadshrunktothesizeofa ictable.

Thedogwasfacingadeadlyendtohisadventure,buthisluckwasabouttochange.SomescientistsandsailorsaboardaresearchshipnamedtheBalticawerepassingthroughthearea.Theysawananimalmovingontheiceinthedistanceanddecidedtoinvestigate.

Atfirst,thepeopleontheshipthoughttheanimalwasaseal.Theywereamazedwhentheygotcloserandsawthatthe“seal”hadfourlegs,floppyears,andatail.Theyhadfoundadogfloatingontheice15m (24km)fromland!

TheBaltica’ssailorswereabletobringtheirshipclosetothedog.Theyloweredanetnexttothedog,buthewastooscaredtoclimbintoit.Thedogevenslippedandfellintothecoldwaterwhiletheyweretryingtohelphim.

Luckily,hewasabletoclimbbackontotheslipperyice.

Fearingthatthedogwoulddrown,thecrewloweredaraft.Adam,theship’smechanic,usedtherafttogetclose

tothedog.Adamgrabbedthedogbythebackoftheneckandpulledhimintotheraft.

Oncethedogwassafeaboardtheship,thecrewdriedhimandwrappedhiminblankets.Theyrubbedhimwithtowelstowarmhimup.Atfirst,thedogwastooweaktostand.Hecurledupandwenttosleeponablanket.Af goodnap,thedogwasstrongenoughtojointhecrewforbreakfastandeatsomesausages.

ThecrewnamedthedogBalticafterthenameoftheseawheretheyrescuedhim.Oncetheshipreturnedtoport,theytookBaltictoaveterinarian.ThevetmadesureBaltichadn’tsufferedanyseriousinjuriesfromhisicyadventure.ThecrewalsosearchedforBaltic’sownersforseveralweeksbutcouldn’tfindthem.Adam,thesailorwhopulledBalticintotheraft,decidedtoadopthim.

Now,Balticisthemascotoftheresearchshipthatfoundhimandtravelswiththecreweverywhere.Hehasmanyfansaroundtheworldwholearnedabouthisincrediblejourneyandrescue.TheofPolandevenwrotealettertothecrewoftheship,praisingthemforsavingBaltic’slife.Balticstartedoutcold,wet,andaloneontheicebutendedupwarm,dry,andsurroundedbynewfriends.
