ItiscalledtheSunTripbecausethecontestantsusevarioustypesofbikespoweredbythesun.Weareallveryfamiliarwiththeuseofsolarenergyfordomesticuse,forexampletoheatthehouse.Themainaimofthisracethoughwashowwecanuseenergyfromthesunintransportation.
TheracewasorganisedbyaFrenancalledFlorianBaillywhocycledasolarbikefromParistoTokyoin2011.Hisjourneywas12000kilometreslongandittookhim4months.Maybeitwasthenthathethoughtofthisnewracewhichwasover7000kilometreslong,7300kilometrestobeprecise,andittookthecompetitorsfromtheFrenchtownofChamberytotheKazakhcapitalcityAstana.
Normally,therearequiteafewcheckpointstogothroughduringarace.However,theSunTriponlyhadtwo.Initially,theorganiserswerethinkingofasmallvillageintheAlpsasthefirstcheckpoint.Becauseoftoomanyobjectionsfromthelocals,theychoseamountainpassinstead.Itwasquiteachallengingcetoreachonasolarbike,asitis2188metresabovesealevel.
TheRussianOlympiccityofSochiwasthesecondpointthecompetitorshadtopassontheirway.Itdependsentirelyonthecompetitorswhichroutetheychoosebetweenthestartandfinish,aslongastheypassthroughthecheckpoints.
Eventhoughtheracewasinitshumblebeginnings,quiteafewteamsshowedtheirinterest–over30teamssignedup,butonly28tookpart,whichwasstillahealthynumber.Theparticipantscamefromallovertheworld,butmainlyfromFrance,BelgiumandCanada.Theteamscouldcompeteintwodifferentcategories.Thefirstcategorywasarealrace–theteamshadtotryandreachAstanaintheshortesttime.Thesecondcategorywasabitunusualanditinvolvedcompetinginreportingthenewsonthedevelopmentsfromthejourneyandalsothebestwge.TheteamIdecidedtofollowwasapairfromtheCzechRepublic,PendTom.Theychosetworecliningtricyclesequippedwithso-called‘reptile’panelsmadeupfromsolarpanel
cut-offs.Iwasveryimpressedwiththespeedthesebikesproducedonsunnydays.Thankstothisspeedtheymanagedtodo300kilometresaday.Incomparison,duringcloudydaystheiraverageagedroppeddownto100kilometresaday.
Gettingreadyforanyraceisveryimportant.TheCzechpairpickedswimmingasawayofstrengtheningtheirmusclesfortherace.Mostoftheothercontestantstoldmethattheyspentalotoftimebikinginhotweatheranddifficultterrain.
TheCzechteamwereontheirwaytowinningtherace,butseveralunexpectedproblemsslowedthemdown.Whilsttheyhaddifficultywithextremeweatheringeneral,therewasonethatlostthemtheirfirstce.Theirbikesgotstuckinthemudafterveryheavyrain.Asaresult,theycame.Nowthey’realreadynningtheirnextadventureandIwishthemallthebest.**

V2No.Iwasluckytogetthroughtheselectionprocess.Youreallyneedalotofstaminatocopewiththephysicalandpsychologicalsideofthings.Nothingcanprepareyouforthat.WhenIfirstapplied,therewereabout10000otherapplicants.Then,onlyaquarterwereinvitedforthefirstroundoftests.It’swellknownthatthetestsareverycomprehensiveandmorethan50%ofapplicantsfailtheirmedicaltestsalone,butweallexpectedthat.
V1Canyoulusaboutyourexperienceofthetrainingthatfollowed?
V2AfterIwasaccepted,IhadtomovetotheTrainingCentreonmyownandleavingmyfamilybehindwasverytoughforme.Thelessonsinspacecraftengineeringwereverydemandingtoo,althoughmypreviouspilottraininghelpedabit.WealsohadtohaveaworkingknowledgeofRussiantooperatethespacecraftthattookustotheSpaceStation.Whenitcametolanguagelearning,thatwaswhatIhadmosttroubledealingwith.

V2WerehearsedeverythingonEarthbeforetake-off;evenscaryscenariossuchasputtingoutafireinsideaspacecraft.ally,Ifoundmyfirstrealwalkinspaceterrifying.ButthatwasnothingcomparedtothetimewhenIwasngmaintenanceoutsidethecraftandmyhelmethadaleak,butluckily,Imanagedtogetbacksafely.

DuringhisresearchinMalawi,hewashotofindmoresimilarbiodiversityspotsintheregion.OnedayhenoticedthattherearesimilarmountainsacrosstheborderontheMozambiqueside.AssoonasDrBurnsreturnedtotheUK,heimmediayresearchedthespecificareausingEarth.Afterzoomingin,henoticedaverydarkgreenpatchonMountMabu,whichcouldonlymeanonething–therainhe’dbeenlookingfor.FurtherresearchshowedthatMountMabuhadneverbeenmapped,orexploredandwasthereforemostdefiniyhidinggreattreasures.
DrBurnswentbacktotheregiontoexamineandconfirmhisfindings.HewasnningtogoinMarchbutsinceittendstobethewettestmonth,theexpeditionwaspostponeduntillaterintheyear.HifinallysetoffatthebeginningofOctober.Theinternationalteamconsistedof18scientistsand53porters.Theyhadtoendureademandingclimbupthemountainfirsttoreachtherain.Thehightemperaturesalsoaddedtothechallenge.WhenDrBurnsandtheexpeditionenteredtherain,theywereastonishedbythesizeofthetreesandthenumberofbustlinglifeformsaroundthem.
SincetheveryfirsttripmadebyDrBurns,12newspeciesoflivingcreaturesandntshavebeendiscovered.MountMabuishometoawidevarietyofbirds,butterflies,reptilesandtropicalnts.Amongstthosespeciestherearesomethatareextremelyrareandcan’tbefoundanywhereelseintheworld.Thatiswhythescientistsweredelightedwhenin2009theernmentannouncedthatallloggingintheMabuwouldbeprevented.
