Twenty-fourhoursandfourairportslaterwelandedinCusco,Peru,acityofonemillioningfromVancouverIslandwithonly100feetabovesealevel,weknewthatwewerenowatamuchhigheraltitude(海拔)—over11,000feet—andneededtimetogetusedtothescarceroxygen(缺氧)levels!Wefollowedtheadviceofothertravelersandthelocals:drinklotsofcocaleafteaandrestforacoupleofhoursbeforeanyactivity.

WeweresoonhikingthroughtheruinsandsurroundingancientcastlesofCusco.LeavingCuscothenextday,westoppedattheMorayRuins,whichwereusedforfarmingbytheIncas.Theirsizeanduniquedesignshouldbeconsideredalessoninhistoricalengineeringskills.ThisIncasiteisoneoftheleastknowntouristdestinations,butit’soneofthemostinterestingplacestovisit.

ArrivinginthebeautifulSacredValley,westayedatWillkaT’ikaforthenextweek.Thisplaceiswonderful.Weenjoyeddeliciousvegetarianmeals,allmadewithlocalproducebylovingQuechuapeople.

Youcan’tgotoPeruwithoutvisitinghistoricMachuPicchu.The“road”uptotheruinsismadeupofanendlessseriesofswitchbacks(急转弯),resultingincoldsweats.Itwasworththeride,though.

ItwastoosoonbeforewewereleavingPeru.WelearnedtheuniquehistoryofInca,Quechuaculture,andthefarmingmethodsstillwidelypracticed.ThebestthingwetookawayreturninghometoVancouverIslandwashowsimpleandcaringthepeopleareandhowdeeplytheylovetheearthandeveryonetheymeet.
