TheancientChineseneedletherapyhasbeenaroundintheUKformanyyears,butthisisthefirsttimeithasbeenofficiallyendorsedbytheNHS’sadvisorybody,theNationalInstituteforClinicalExcellence(orNICE).Traditionally,doctorsintheUKhaveadvisedbackpainsuffererstostayactive,dostretchingexercisesandtakepainkillerswhennecessary.InmoreseriouscasessomepeoplearegivenX-raytreatmentorinjectionswiththerapeuticsubstances.

NICE,however,saythereisevidencethatacupuncturemaybemoreeffectivethanexpensiveX-raysorinjections,sopatientswhohavebeensufferingforoversixweeksshouldbegivenachoice.Asanalternativetoacupuncture,patientswillbeabletooptforeitheracourseofspinalmanipulation,oraseriesofspecialexercisesessions.IntheUK,acupunctureisclassedasacomplementarytherapy,whichisthetermgiventoamedicalprocedurewhichhasn’tbeensubjectedtothestricttrialsbywhichscientistsprovesometreatmentswork.WhilemanyexpertshavewelcomedthemovetomakeacupunctureavailableontheNHS,somearestillscepticalaboutitseffectiveness.ResearchfromtheUSearlierthismonthfoundthatsimulatedacupunctureusingtoothpickswhichdonotpiercetheskincouldbeasgoodasusingrealneedles.Sowhilesomeareyettobeconvinced,backpainsuffererswillbehopingthatacupuncturehelpsgetthemfeelinghealthyandmobileagain.Employers,ontheotherhand,willbehopingitgetsthembacktowork.
