Coveringanareaof80,000squaremeters(about20acres),Dr.SunYat-sen'sMausoleumislocatedintheZhongMountainScenicAreaintheeastsuburbofNanjingCity,JiangsuProvince.AsthemausoleumofDr.SunYat-sen,thefatheroftheRepublicofChina,itisconsideredtheHolylandofChinesepeoplebothhomeandabroad.Withdeephistoricalsignificance,magnificentarchitectureandbeautifulscenery,itisamustseewhentravelinginNanjing.Dr.SunYat-sen(1866-1925)wasagreatforerunneroftheChinesedemocraticrevolutionandledbyDr.SuntheChinesepeoplebroughtdownthecorruptruleoftheQingDynasty(1644-1911)andended2000yearsofthefeudalmonarchysystem,whichledtheChinesepeoplesintoanewage.

ThemajesticMausoleumsconstructionwasstartedin1926andcompletedin1929.ThewholeMausoleumScenicArearepresentsanalarmbellasseenfromtheair,symbolizingthenoblespiritandheroiceffortsofDr.SunYat-sen'sdevotiontotheChinesepeople,fightofoppressionandwiningtheindependenceofChina.Facingsouth,thestructures,alongwiththemountainascendsgraduallyalongwiththecentralaxislinerunningfromsouthtothenorthandisregardedasthemostoutstandingmausoleuminChinesemodernarchitecturalhistory.Travelingalongthemarbleroad,firstlyyouwillarriveathalf-moonsquareinthesouthoftheMausoleum.Itisunderstatedandmodest,whileendowinggrandeurtotheMausoleum.ThenattheentrancetothemausoleumstandsthegreatmarblePaifang(memorialarchway)o­nwhichiswritten'BoAi'meaning'love'.ThroughPaifangthereisaPasswayof480meters(about1574feet)longand40meters(about131feet)wide,o­nbothsidesofwhichstandorderlypineandcypressestrees.ContinuingforwardtotheendofthePassway,thereistheFrontispiece,standingsome16.5meters(about54feet)highand27meters(about88feet)wide.TheFrontispiecehasthreearchways,eachofwhichhasapairofsymmetricalenchasedcoppergates.FourChinesecharactersareinscribedo­nthelinteloverthedoorwayswrittenbyDr.SunYat-senmeaning'theworldiscommonwealth',whichfullyexplainsthecausehestruggledforduringhislife.ThroughtheFrontispieceisapavilionmadeofmarble,inwhichagreatstele,9meters(about29feet)highand4meters(about13feet)wide,waserectedbyKuomintanginmemoryofDr.SunYat-sen.onthesteletherearecarvedjust24ChinesecharactersandnoepitaphaspeoplethinkthattherearenowordscapableofrepresentingthisgiantofmodernChina.
