ThereareseveralnewspapersintheUnitedStatesthathavehugecirculations(suchasTheWallStreetJournalandUSATodaywithabout2millioneach),andthereareverysmallspecializednewspapers(forexample,countryweekliesandcollegenewspapers)withcirculationsofafewthousandatmost.
Inadditiontoprovidingavariedassortmentofnews,opinion,andfeatures,U.S.newspapers—andthoseinotherfree-marketnations—survivebypublishingadvertising.Thenewspaperisbothabusiness,withaneedtomakeaprofit,andapublicservice.Inthelatterfunction,U.S.newspapersareundertheprotectionofthefreedomofthepressclauseofthe1stAmendmentoftheU.S.Constitution.Theyalsoreceivesuchbenefitsasreducedmailingrates.
History
TheearliestnewspaperswereperhapsthehandwrittennoticesinancientRomecalledActadiurna,ActaSenatus,andActaPublica,whichwerepostedtobereadbythepublic.Inthemid-15thcenturytheGermaninventorJohannGutenbergdevelopedmovablemetaltype(movablewoodentypewasusedasearlyasthe6thcenturyintheFarEast);thismadepossibletheeventualdevelopmentofthenewspaper.
TheGermanswerenewspaperpioneersinEurope.Forerunnersofnewspapersastheyareknowntodaywerepublishedlaterinthe15thcenturyinNuremberg,Cologne,andAugsburg.Inthe16thand17thcenturies,rudimentarynewspapersspreadthroughoutGermanyandappearedelsewhereinEurope—Venicein1562,theLowCountriesin1616,Britainin1620,andFrancein1631.Subsequently,thenewspaperspreadaroundtheworld.
U.S.newspaperhistorycanbedividedintoeightperiods:(1)thecolonialpress,(2)theRevolutionaryWarpress,(3)thepoliticalpress,(4)thepennypress,(5)NewJournalism,orthepressofpersonaleditors,(6)theyellowpress,(7)jazzjournalism,and(8)thecurrentperiodofconsolidation.
ThefirstnewspaperinAmericawasaBostonnewssheetcalledPublickOccurrencesBothForeignandDomestic,in1690;itappearedonlyonce.EarlypublishersofnoteintheAmericancolonieswereprinterssuchasJohnCampbellandJamesandBenjaminFranklin.America’sfirstregularlypublishednewspaperwastheBostonNews-Letter(1704).AlandmarkeventinU.S.journalismoccurredin1735,whenJohnPeterZengerwastriedforseditiouslibelbutacquittedbecausehehadprintedthetruth.ThepoliticaltractsofJohnDickinsonandothershelpedsetthestagefortheAmericanRevolution,duringwhichbothsideshadnewspapersupporters.
ThepostrevolutionarypoliticalpressreflectedthepartisanbattlesbetweentheFederalistsandtheRepublicans.Newspaperswerefosteringanationalconsciousnessanddevelopingpoliticalawareness.ThePennyPress(1830s-1860s)providedhumaninterestatalowpricefortheordinaryreader.LeadingexamplesofthePennyPresswereTheNewYorkHeraldofJamesGordonBennett,andtheTribuneofHoraceGreeley.
FollowingtheCivilWarcameNewJournalism,whenthemodernnewspapertookform.Threemendominatedthisperiodofnews-and-opinionjournalisminwhichtheeditor’svoicewasprominent:JosephPulitzer,WilliamRandolphHearst,andE.W.Scripps.Intensecompetition—particularlybetweenPulitzerandHearst—ledinthe1890stoyellowjournalism,withitsemphasisonsensationalism.Sensationalandentertainment-orientednewspapersalsoputsomeemphasisonmuckrakingandconfrontation.
