thisyearhastakenusclosertotheachievementofanon-racial,non-sexist,democraticsouthafricainwhichallofus,blackandwhite,canliveinpeace,harmonyandprosperity.

thisisatimewhenweshouldcollectivelyreflectontheprogressmadeduringtheyearandcommitourselvesfurthertoaddressthechallengesthatfaceourcountryanditspeople.

wedosowithaviewtoconsolidatingthegainswehavethusfarmadewhilesparingneitherstrengthnoreffortinconfrontingthechallengesfacingourcountry,whicharepoverty,unemploymentandinequality.

inadifficultglobaleconomicenvironment,wehavebeenworkingveryhardtostrengthenoureconomythroughinvestmentininfrastructure,providingsupporttokeyindustrialsectors,anddevelopingouragriculturalvaluechain.

workingtogether,wehavestabilisedthesupplyofelectricitytoourhomes,toourschools,hospitals,factoriesandbusinesses.

workingtogetheragainwithourkeyroleplayersinlabour,business,communitiesandgovernment,wehavemadesignificantprogresstowardstheintroductionofanationalminimumwageasoneofthekeymechanismsthatwillenableustoreduceincomeinequality.

thesedeliberationshavebeenpartofabroaderprocessamongallsocialpartnerstoimprovethelabourrelationsenvironmentinourcountry,whichweexpecttocompleteinthenewyear.

presidentjacobzumahasledanimportantengagementwithmajorstakeholdersinaddressingkeyissuesarisingfromstudents’protestsaroundthecostofhighereducation.

weareconfidentthatworkingtogetherwithstudentsorganisationsandmanagementwewillfindlong-termsolutionstoallthesechallenges.

workingtogetherassouthafricans,wewillbeabletorealisethecallthatwasmadeinthefreedomcharterforhighereducationandtechnicaltrainingtobeopentoallsouthafricans.

itisamatterofconcernthatlargelypeacefulprotesthasonoccasionbeenmarredbythedestructionofcriticalpropertyofschools,libraries,clinicsanddamagetoothercommunityinfrastructure.

asasociety,weneedtoremainresoluteinourconvictionthatinademocraticsocietywhichweare,protestmusttakeplacewithintheframeworkofthelaw.

wemustworktogethertoprotectthesecommunitystructures,whicharereallyassetsofourpeople,forthebenefitoffuturegenerations.

aspartoftheafricanunion,wecontinuetoworkwithintheframeworkofagenda2063toensurethepoliticalandeconomicrenewalofourcontinentbasedongoodpoliticalandeconomicgovernance.

workingtogetherwithsistercountriesinsadc,wehavecontinuedtoconsolidateregionalintegrationefforts,whichwilladdmomentumtowardsbuildingunited,prosperousandbetterafrica.

inspiredbythevisionofprovidingafricansolutionstoafricanproblems,weremainpartofeffortsbysadc,theafricanunion,regionaleconomiccommunitiesandindeedtheuntohelpbringpeaceandstabilityinthosecountriesthatarestillafflictedbyconflict.thesecountriesincludethekingdomoflesotho,burundiandsouthsudan.

aspartofthefamilyofnationsandworkingtogetherwithlike-mindedcountries,wehavepersistedinoureffortstobringaboutafundamentaltransformationoftheunitednationsandotherinstitutionsofglobalgovernance.

ourcountryparticipatedatthehighestlevelinthecop21climatechangeconferenceinparis.

wehavebeguntofeeltheeffectsofclimatechange,whichisimpactingonsecurityofourwater,foodsecurityandeconomicdevelopment.

wewelcomeeveryresolutiontakenbytheinternationalcommunitytolimittheeffectsofclimatechangeonhumanityasawholeanddevelopingcountriesinparticular.

southafricawashonouredtorecentlyhostthefirstforumforchina-africacooperation,whichwasheldonoursoilaswellastheafricanunionsummitearlierthisyear.

thehostingofeventsofthesemagnitudes,coupledwiththeworld-classinfrastructureatourdisposal,isanexpressionoftheconfidencethattheworldhasplacedinourcountryanditspeople.

ourdailydeedsasordinarysouthafricansmustproduceanactualsouthafricanrealitythatwillreinforcehumanity'sbeliefinjustice,strengthenitsconfidenceinthenobilityofthehumansoulandsustainallourhopesforagloriouslifeforall.
