4TextA:TheEvolutionoftheComputerAge01TheComputerAgedidnotreallybeginuntilthefirstcomputerwasmadeavailabletothepublicin1951.Themodernageofcomputersspansmorethan70years,whichistypicallybrokendownintofivegenerations.Eachgenerationismarkedbyasignificantadvancementintechnology.TheFirstGeneration(TheVacuumTubeAge,1951—1957):Duringthisgeneration,computerswerebuiltwithvacuumtubes—electronictubesthatweremadeofglassandwereaboutthesizeoflightbulbs.Thesecomputerswereexpensiveandbulky.Theyusedmachinelanguageforcomputingandcouldsolvejustoneproblematatime.Intheyear1951,thefirstcommerciallyavailableelectronicdigitalcomputerwasintroducedtothepublic,whichmarkedthefirstgenerationcomputerscameintobeing.IBM(InternationalBusinessMachinesCorporation),todayabignameinthelistofcomputertechnologyindustries,announcedtheIBM702ElectronicDataProcessingMachinein1953.Itwasdevelopedforbusinessuseandcouldaddressscientificandengineeringapplications.TheSecondGeneration(TheTransistorAge,1958—1963):Thisgenerationbeganwiththefirstcomputersbuiltwithtransistors—smalldevicesthattransferredelectronicsignalsacrossaresistor.Becausetransistorsweremuchsmaller,usinglesspower,andcreatedlessheatthanvacuumtubes,thenewcomputerswerefaster,smaller,cheaper,energy-efficient,andmorereliablethanthefirst-generationmachineswere.Inthe1960s,transistorbasedcomputersreplacedvacuumtubecomputers,markedthesecondgenerationofcomputers.TextA:TheEvolutionoftheComputerAge01TheThirdGeneration(TheIntegratedCircuitAge,1964—1969):In1964,computermanufacturersbeganreplacingtransistorswithintegratedcircuits.Anintegratedcircuit(IC)isacompleteelectroniccircuitonasmallchipmadeofsilicon.Thesecomputersweremorereliableandcompactthancomputersmadewithtransistors,andtheycostlesstomanufacture.What’smore,theuseofthenewtypesofcomputerincreasedthespeedandefficiencyofcomputers.Intheyear1965,DigitalEquipmentCorporation(DEC)introducedthefirstminicomputers(Figure1-1).TheFourthGeneration(TheMicroprocessorAge,1970—1990):Thereweremanykeyadvancementsthatweremadeduringthisgeneration,themostsignificantofwhichwastheuseofthemicroprocessor—aspecializedchipdevelopedforcomputermemoryandlogic.Thisrevolutionizedthecomputerindustrybymakingitpossibletouseasinglechiptocreatesmallerpersonalcomputers.Microprocessorscameupduringthe1970s.Intelproducedlarge-scaleintegrationcircuitsin1971.AppleComputer,Inc.,foundedbySteveWozniakandSteveJobs,broughtouttheMacintoshpersonalcomputerin1984.Microsoft,acompanyfoundedbyayoungHarvarddrop-outnamedBillGates,whowrotetheprogramminglanguageBASICforoneoftheearliestmicrocomputers(Figure1-2),introducedtheirWindowsgraphicaluserinterfaceintheyear1985.TextA:TheEvolutionoftheComputerAge01TheFifthGeneration(TheAgeofConnectivity,1990andbeyond):Ourcurrentgenerationhasbeenreferredtoas“ConnectedGeneration”becauseoftheindustry’smassiveefforttoincreasetheconnectivityofcomputers.TherapidlyexpandingInternet,WorldWideWeb,andintranetshavecreatedaninformationhighwaythathasenabledbothcomputerprofessionalsandhomecomputeruserstocommunicatewithothersacrosstheglobe.What’smore,presentlythecomputerswouldbecapableofmassiveparallelprocessing,supportvoicerecognitionandunderstandnaturallanguage.Thecurrentadvancementsincomputertechnologyarelikelytotransformcomputingmachinesintointelligentonesthatpossessself-organizingskills.Theevolutionofcomputerswillcontinue,perhapstillthedaytheirprocessingpowersequalhumanintelligence.Figure1-1 MinicomputerFigure1-2 MicrocomputerTextA:TheEvolutionoftheComputerAge01advancement01vacuumtubebulkytransistor
