InMarch2024,theIndianAutoRetailsectorexperiencedmodestgrowthof3.14%YoY,asreportedbyFADAPresident,Mr.ManishRajSinghania.Thetwo-wheeler(2W)andthree-wheeler(3W)segmentssawincreasesof5%and17%respectively,whilepassengervehicles(PV),tractors(Trac)andcommercialvehicles(CV)faceddeclinesof6%,3%,and6%respectively.
Mr.Singhaniahighlightedthat“the2Wsegmentdemonstratedresilienceandadaptability,withelectricvehicle(EV)salessurgingduetotheexpirationoftheFAME2subsidyonMarch31st.Thisledtoanotableboostinthe2W-EVmarketshareto9.12%.Positivemarketsentimentwassupportedbyseasonalevents,improvedvehiclesupply,andfinancialincentives.Despitefacingmarketvolatilityandintensecompetition,theindustryisstrategicallyevolving,particularlyinthepremiumandEVcategories,signallingabrightfuture.
The3Wsegmentshowedanencouragingsalestrendhittinganall-timehighretail,drivenbythegrowingacceptanceofEVs.TheintroductionofEVautosandloaderspositivelyimpactedtheretailenvironment.Althoughfacedwithelection-relateduncertaintiesandconcernsoverpolicychanges,suchasfreebustravelforwomen,theoveralloutlookforthesectorremainsupbeat,supportedbythequalityofvehiclesandstrongmarketdemand.
ThePVsectorencounteredchallenges,withaMoMdecreaseof2%andaYoYfallof6%.Thedownturnwasinfluencedbyheavydiscountingandselectivefinancingfurtheraffectedbyeconomicworriesandtheelectoralclimate.Nonetheless,positivessuchasimprovedvehicleavailability,increasedstocklevelsandnewmodellaunchesdidstimulatedemandincertainareas.Theimpactofelectionactivitiesandchangesinfestivaldatesalsoplayedaroleinsalesdynamics.
FortheCVsector,Marchpresentedacomplexscenario.Theelectionannouncementresultedinatemporaryreductioninpurchases,thoughthereisanexpectationofarecoverypost-election,withdecreasingconcernsabouttheforthcomingmonsoon.Thesectorgrappledwithissueslikerecentdeclines,pooragriculturaloutcomes,discountpressuresandfinancingdifficulties.Ontheupside,therewasstrongdemandinspecificareassuchascoalandcementtransportation,bolsteredbybulkordersandvehicleupgrades,whichenhancedcustomerengagement.”

ForthePVsegment,FY24wasamilestoneyear,achievingan8.45%YoYgrowthandreachinganall-timehigh.Factorssuchasimprovedvehicleavailability,acompellingmodelmixandthelaunchofnewmodelsplayedpivotalroles.Enhancedsupplydynamics,strategicmarketingefforts,everexpandingqualityroadinfrastructureandstrongdemandintheSUVsegment,nowholdinga50%marketshare,significantlycontributedtothissuccess.
TheCVsegmentexperienceda5%growthinFY24,demonstratingthesector'sstrategicresponsetodiversemarketdynamics.Improvedvehiclesupply,effectiveplanning,andincreasedfreightmovementdrovesignificantreplacementpurchases.Additionally,thesegmentcapitalizedongovernmenttenders,betterroadconnectivityandbulkdeals,showcasingitsadaptabilityandstrategicmarketpositioning."
Near-TermOutlook
