thathastWOextraneutrons.Itreturnstoamorestableformofcarbonthroughaprocess
calleddecay(衰减).Thisprocessinvolvesthelossoftheextraneutronsandenergyfromthe
nucleus.
InLibby'sradiocarbondatingtechnique,theweakradioactiveemissions(放射)from
thisdecayprocessarecountedbyinstrumentssuchasaradiationdetectorandcounter.The
decayrateisusedtodeterminetheproportionofC-14atomsinthesamplebeingdated.
Carbon-14isproducedintheEaah,satmospherewhenNitrogen(氨)-14orN-14
interactswithcosmicrays(宇宙射线).ScientistsbelievesincetheEarthwasformed,theamountof
nitrogeninthearmospherehasremainedconstant.Consequently,C-14formationisthoughtto
occurataconstantrate.NowtheratiOofC-14toothercarbonatomsintheatmosphereis
known.Mostscientistsagreethatthisratioisusefulfordatingitemsbacktoatleast50,000years.
