firm-doublethefigurefiveyearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecome

downto$50billion.Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssize

becauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passion

andcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewotherindustries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst'ssale,spendingof

anysortbecamedeeplyunfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethe
