Norwich,thecapitalofthepartofBritainknownasEastAnglia,hasbeenin

existenceformorethantwothousandyears.Itbeganasasmallvillagebesidet

heRiverWensum.AtthetimeoftheNormaninvasionin1066ithadgrownto

becomeoneofthelargesttownsinEngland.

Withtwocathedralsandamosque(清真寺),Norwichhaslongbeenapopul

arcentreforvariousreligions.Thefirstcathedralwasbuiltin1095andhasrecen

tlycelebratedits900thanniversary,whileNorwichitselfhadayearofcelebration

in1994tomarkthe800thanniversaryofthecityreceivingaRoyalCharter.Thi

sallowedittobecalledacityandtogovernitselfindependently.

Today,incomparisonwithplaceslikeLondonorManchester,Norwichisquit

esmall,withapopulationofaround150,000,butinthe16thcenturyNorwichw

asthesecondlargestcityofEngland.Itcontinuedtogrowforthenext300years

andgotricherandricher,becomingfamousforhavingasmanychurchesasther

eareweeksintheyearandasmanypubsastherearedaysintheyear.

Nowadays,therearefarfewerchurchesandpubs,butin1964theUniversity

ofEastAngliawasbuiltinNorwich.Withitsfast-growingstudentpopulationan
