Intro

DescriptionSpecifications

ThePermeabilityPluggingTester(PPT)isamodificationofthestandard500mLHTHPFilterpress.Itmaybeusedinthefieldorinalaboratoryenvironment.Theinstrumentisusefulforperformingfiltrationtestsonpluggingmaterialswithouttheinterferenceofparticlessettlingonthefiltermediumduringtheheatupprocess.ThePPTisveryusefulinpredictinghowadrillingfluidcanformalowpermeabilityfiltercaketosealoffdepleted,underpressuredintervalsandhelppreventdifferentialsticking.TypicaldifferentialpressuresaremuchhigherthanthoseseeninstandardHTHPtesting.

ThepressurecellissimilartothoseseeninstandardHTHPfiltrationtesting,butitisinvertedwiththefiltermediumandthebackpressurereceiverontopoftheassembly.Itispressurizedwithhydraulicoilandahandpump.Afloatingpistonseparatestheoilfromthetestfluidinthecell.Thecellhasamaximumpressureratingof6,000psi.

Bothendcapsaredesignedtoaccepta1/4"NPTfitting.Theinlet,orbottom,capisfittedwithaquick-connectfortheconnectiontothehydraulicpressuremanifold.Thestandardhydraulicpressuremanifoldsareequippedwithareliefvalve.

TheLCMreceiverismountedontopofthecell.

Temperature

Theheatingjacket,testcell,andpressureassemblieswillbeveryhotduringtesting.Handlethesecomponentswithcare.Nevertouchhotcomponentswithoutwearingprotectiveclothing.

Atelevatedtemperatures,thefluidinthetestcellwillexpand.Neverfillthetestcellcompletelywithfluid.Alwaysleavesomevoidspacetoallowforthermalexpansion.Refertopage

forrecommendedfillvolumes.

Pressure

AlwayspressurizewitheitherCarbonDioxideorNitrogen.DonotuseNitrousOxide(NO),Oxygen(O),orcompressedair.Thesegassesaredangerous

atelevatedtemperatures.

Themaximumworkingpressureofthetestcell(6,000PSI/41.2MPa)ismarkedonthecellbodyandcap.Neverexceedthispressure.

Equipment

Inspectallo-ringsbeforeeverytest.Discardanythatshowsignsofdamageorwear.Looksfornicks,cuts,orbrittleo-rings.Twosetsofo-ringsareincludedwiththeFilterPress.ThefirstsetismadefromViton75D.Theseo-ringsareblackandshouldbeusedfortestsupto400°Fonly.ThesecondsetismadefromViton90D.Theseo-ringsaregreenandshouldbeusedfortestsupto500°F.

CellCorrosion

Testfluidsunderhightempreatureandpressurecancorrodethecellbodyandcaps.Carefullyinspectthecellbodyandcallsforcorrosionbeforeandaftereachtest.

Somematerialsaremoresusceptibletocorrosionthanother.Also,somefluidsandadditivesaremorecorrosivethanothers.OFITEoffersavarietyofcellmaterialsfordifferentlevelsofcorrosionresistanceandcost.

Pump

ForsafeoperationoftheHydraulicPumpPressurizationsystem,makesurethepressurehasbeenreleasedandthegaugeonthepumpreadszerobefore:

Attemptingtodisconnectthepressurehosefromthecellatthequick-connect.

Attemptingtoremovethecellfromtheheatingjacket.

ReallocatingormovingthePPTinthelaboratory.

Refillingthehydraulicpump.

Performinganymaintenanceincludingtighteningleakingfittingsonthepump,hydraulicfittings,orcellassembly.

Whenrefillingorrepairingthehydraulicsystem,makesureanyspilledoiliscleaned.Oilonthefloorisveryslipperyandcancausefallsandinjury.Oilspillsonthebenchcanaccumulateandbecomeafirehazard.

QuickStart1.Placethethermometerintheheatingjacket.

Preheattheheatingjacketto10°F(6°C)abovethetesttemperature.Thepilotlightwillturnonatthetargettemperature.

Soakaceramicdiskinbasefluidforatleast10minutesbeforetesting.

Inspectallo-rings.Replaceanythatshowsignsofdamageorwear.

Applygreasetoallo-rings.

Assemblybothcellcapsandthepiston.Placeo-ringsinthegroovesaroundthecapandpiston.

Placeano-ringontheshoulderinsidethecellontheendmarked“IN”.

Applygreasetothethreadsofthecellcapsandvalvestems.

Screwtheinletcellcapassemblyintothecellbodyandtightenitcom-pletely.

Pushintheredknobontheheatingjacket.Placethecellintheheatingjacketwiththeinletsidepointingdown.

Screwtheinletpressureassemblyintotheinletcellcap.

Screwthet-handleintothepiston.

Pushthepistoninsidethecellagainsttheinletcellcap.Tightenthesetscrewonthepistonbleedvalve.

Connecttheinletpressuremanifoldtotheinletpressureassembly.

Opentheballvalveonthemanifoldandclosethepressurereleasevalveonthepump.

Strokethepumpuntilthet-handlerisesabout1.5"(3.8cm).

Unscrewthet-handlefromthepiston.

Pourthetestfluidintothecellallthewayuptotheo-ringshoulder.

Placeano-ringontheshoulderinsidethecellbody.

Placeaceramicdiskontopoftheo-ring.

Screwthecellcapassemblyintothecellbodyandtightenitcompletely.

ConnecttheLCMbottomcapassemblytothecellcapassembly.

Makesurethefilterisinplaceinsidethereceiverbottomcap.

Pourwaterintotheholeinthereceiverbottomcap.

Opentheoutletvalvetoallowexcesswatertodrain,thenclosetheoutletvalve.

Applygreasetothereceivercapo-ringsandplaceonearoundeachcap.

Screwthereceivertopcapontooneendofthereceiverbody.

Screwthereceiverbodyontothebottomreceivercap.

Screwthevalvestemintotheportonthereceivertopcap.

AttachtheCOPressureAssemblytothetopvalvestemandsecureit2

withasafetypin.

Pullouttheredknobontheheatingjacketandlowerthecell.Rotatethecelluntilitseats.

Movethethermometertothecellbody.

PlaceaCObulbintheCOpressureassembly.Setthepressuretotheappropriatebackpressureforyourtest.22

Strokethepumptoapplythesamepressuretothecell.

Whenthecellhasreachedthetesttemperature,strokethepumptoapplytheworkingtestpressuretothecell.

CollectfiltratebyopeningtheneedlevalveontheLCMReceiver.

Attheendofthetest,turnofftheheatingjacket.

Allowthecelltocool.

ClosetheregulatorontheCOpressureassembly.2

Openthepressurereleasevalveonthepumptoreleasepressureinsidethecell.

UnscrewtheVCOfittingtodisconnecttheLCMReceiverfromthecellcap.

Disconnecttheinletpressuremanifoldfromtheinletpressureassembly.

Removethecellfromtheheatingjacketandsetituprighttodisassemble.

Reconnectthepressuremanifoldtotheinletvalvepressureassembly.

Removetheoutletcellcapassembly.

Removetheceramicdiskandsavethefiltercakeforlateranalysis.

Discardanyremainingtestfluid.

Screwthet-handleintothepistonandpushthepistontothebottomofthecell.

Closethepressurereleasevalveonthepumpandtheballvalveonthepressuremanifold.

Disconnectthepressuremanifoldfromtheinletpressureassembly.

Removetheinletpressureassemblyandinletcellcapassembly.

Cleananddrytheentirecellassembly.

Preparation1.Plugtheheatingjacketintoanappropriatepowersource.Placeather-

mometer(#154-20)intotheheatingwellandpreheatto10°F(6°C)abovethetesttemperature.Apilotlightwillcomeonwhentheheatingjacketreachesthetemperaturesetbythecontrolknob.

2.Beforeusingtheceramicdisk,soakitforatleast10minutesinbasefluid.Usewaterforfreshwater-basedfluids,brineforsaltwater-basedfluids,dieselforoil-basedfluids,andasyntheticbaseforsynthetic-basedfluids.Neverreuseadiskexceptforreturnpermeabilitystudies.Belowisalistofceramicdisksavailable:

Pushintheredknobontheheatingjacket.Thismovesthecellrestplungerintopositiontosupportthecell.

Makesurethequick-connectfittingsarecompletelyengaged.Pulldownhardontheringonthefemalefittinguntilitclicksintoplace.

Closethepressurereleasevalveonthepumpbytighteningitclockwise.

Itmaybehelpfultosetarulerontheo-ringshoulderinsidethecell.ThiswillhelpyouseehowfartheT-handlehasrisen.

UnscrewtheT-handlefromthepiston.

Preparethetestfluid.

Carefullypourthetestfluidintothecell.Thefluidlevelshouldbejustbelowtheo-ringshoulder.

Becarefulnottogetfluidontheo-ringshoulder.

Placeano-ringontheshoulderinsidethecellbody.

Placeaceramicdiskoracircleoffilterpaperontopoftheo-ring.

Screwthecellcapassembly(cellcapandmaleVCOfitting)intothecellbodyandtightencompletely.

CellCapAssembly

ConnecttheLCMReceiverbottomcapassembly(bottomcap,needlevalve,andfemaleVCOfitting)tothemaleVCOfittingonthecellcapas-sembly.Makesurethefilterisinplaceinsidethereceiverbottomcap.

Filter(#171-84-014)

O-ring(#171-84-015)

Thespacebetweenthefiltermediaandthereceiverbottomcapshouldbefilledwithwatertoensurethatthevolumeoffiltratepassingthroughthefilterwilldisplaceanequalvolumeoffiltrateintothereceiver.

PourenoughwaterintotheholeintheLCMReceiverbottomcaptofillthevoidspace.

Opentheneedlevalveandallowtheexcesswatertodrain.

Closetheneedvalve.

Applyathincoatofgreasetothereceivercapo-rings(#171-84-015).

Placeoneo-ringaroundeachcap.

Screwthetopcapintooneendofthecellbody(theendsofthebodyareinterchangeable).

Screwthereceiverbodyontothebottomreceivercap.

Screwavalvestemintotheportinthetopreceivercap.

AttachedtheCO2PressureAssembly(#170-04)tothetopvalvestemandsecureitwiththesafetypin(#171-23-1).

Holdtheoutletpressureassemblywithonehandandpullthestopontheheatingjacketoutofthewaytolowerthecellfullyinsidetheheatingjacket.

Rotatethecelluntilitlocksinplaceoverthealignmentpininthebottomoftheheatingjacket.

Placeametaldialthermometer(#154-20)inthetopofthecellinthesmallhole.

UnscrewtheT-screwontheCOpressureassemblytomakesuretheregulatoriscompletelyclosed.2

PlaceaCObulbinthebarrelandscrewitontothepressureassembly.ThiswillpuncturetheCO2bulb.

TurntheT-screwclockwisetosetthebackpressure.Refertothechartbelowtodeterminetheminimumrecommendedbackpressureforyourtesttemperature.

Strokethepumptoapplythesamepressuretothecell.

Makesurethepressurereleasevalveonthepumpisclosedandtheballvalveontheinletmanifoldisopen.

IftheLCMfailstoplugthefiltermedia,itisunlikelythepressureinthecellwillbuild.Ifthecellpressurehasnotincreasedafterapproximately20strokesofthepump,stopthetestandrecordtheresultsas“TotalFluidLoss”.

Throughoutthetest,usethepumptomaintainthepressuredifferential.

Periodicallycheckthethermometerinthetestcellandadjustthethermo-statasneeded.

Whilethecellisheating,thepressureinsidewillriseduetothermalexpansion.Usethepressurereleasevalveonthepumptopreventover-pressurization.Maintainthepressureonthefluiduntilthetempera-turehasstabilized.Theheatingtimeofthesampleshouldneverexceedonehour.

Tocollectfiltrate,holdagraduatedcylinderuptotheoutletportontheLCMReceiverandslowlyopentheneedlevalve.Closethevalveassoonasyouhavecollectedthefiltrate.

Collectfiltrate15secondsafterinitiatingfiltrationtoensurethereisfiltra-tioncontrol.

Continuecollectingfiltratethroughoutthetest.Ataminimum,filtrateshouldbecollectedat15seconds,7.5minutes,and30minutes.

Ifthebackpressurerisesduringthetest,collectsomefiltrateandleavethevalveopenlongenoughtoreducethepressure.

EndingaTest

After30minutes,closetheoutletportonthereceiverandturnofftheheatingjacket.

Allowthecelltocooltoroomtemperaturebeforedisassemblingit.

Afterthecellhascooled,slowlyopenthepressurereleasevalveonthepump.Thiswillallowhydraulicoiltoflowbackintothepump.

Opentheoutletportonthereceivertocollectanyremainingfiltrate.

ClosetheregulatorontheCOpressureassemblyandreleaseanyre-mainingpressurebyopeningthesafetybleedervalve.2

RemovetheCOpressureassemblyfromtheLCMReceiver.

UnscrewtheLCMReceiverbodyfromthebottomreceivercap.

Disconnecttheinletpressuremanifoldfromtheinletpressureassembly(quickconnectfitting).

Asmallamountofhydraulicoilmaybereleased.

Removethecellfromtheheatingjacketandplaceitonastandfordisas-sembly.

Reconnecttheinletpressuremanifoldtotheinletpressureassembly(quickconnectfitting)

Unscrewandremovetheoutletcellcapassembly.

Removetheceramicdiskorfilterpaperandsaveitforanalysis.Discardanyremainingtestfluid.

Iftheceramicdiskdoesnoteasilycomeoutofthecell:

Closethepressurereliefvalveonthepump.

Strokethepumpuntilthepressurepushestheceramicdiskoutofthecell.

Thenre-openthepressurereliefvalveonthepump.

ScrewtheT-handleintothepistonontheoutletside.

Manuallypushthepistontothebottomofthecell.Thiswillforceanyre-maininghydraulicfluidbackintothepump.

Closethepressurereleasevalveonthepumpandtheballvalveonthepressuremanifold.

Disconnectthepressuremanifoldfromtheinletpressureassembly.

Removetheinletpressureassembly,cellcapassembly,andpiston.Beawarethatsomehydraulicfluidwillremaininthecell.

CleananddrytheentirecellandLCMReceiverassemblies.Paycloseat-tentiontothethreads.Alsomakesuretocleantheoutletvalveassembly.Inspectallo-ringsandreplaceanythatshowsignsofdamageorwear.

DataFiltrateVolume2

TheHTHPfilterpresshasafiltrationareaof3.55in2(22.9cm).Thisishalftheareaofastandardfiltrationtest,whichis7.1in2(45.8cm2).Tocomparetheresultsofthistesttoastandardfiltrationtest,doublethetotalfiltratevol-umecollected.
