benefactorshavesucceededintheirchosenfields,theysay,andtheywanttousetheirwealthto
drawattentiontothosewhohavesucceededinscience.
What'snottolike?Quitealot,accordingtoahandfulofscientistsquotedintheNewsFeature.
Youcannotbuyclass,astheoldsayinggoes,andtheseupstartentrepreneurscannotbuytheir
prizestheprestigeoftheNobels.Thenewawardsareanexerciseinself-promotionforthose
behindthem,sayscientists.Theycoulddistorttheachievement-basedsystemofpeer-review-led
research.Theycouldcementthestatusquoofpeer-reviewedresearch.Theydonotfund
peer-reviewedresearch.Theyperpetuatethemythofthelonegenius.
Thegoalsoftheprize-giversseemasscatteredasthecriticism.Somewanttoshock,othersto
drawpeopleintoscience,ortobetterrewardthosewhohavemadetheircareersinresearch.
AsNaturehaspointedoutbefore,therearesomelegitimateconcernsabouthowscience
prizes-bothnewandold-aredistributed.TheBreakthroughPrizeinLifeSciences,launched
thisyear,takesanunrepresentativeviewofwhatthelifesciencesinclude.ButtheNobel
Foundation'slimitofthreerecipientsperprize,eachofwhommuststillbeliving,haslongbeen
outgrownbythecollabora-tivenatureofmodernresearch—aswillbedemonstratedbythe
inevitablerowoverwhoisignoredwhenitcomestoacknowledgingthediscoveryoftheHiggs
boson.TheNobelswere,ofcourse,themselvessetupbyaveryrichindividualwhohaddecided
whathewantedtodowithhisownmoney.Time,ratherthanintention,hasgiventhem
legitimacy.
Asmuchassomescientistsmaycomplainaboutthenewawards,twothingsseemclear.First,
mostresearcherswouldacceptsuchaprizeiftheywereofferedone.Second,itissurelyagood
thingthatthemoneyandattentioncometoscienceratherthangoelsewhere,Itisfairto
criticizeandques-tionthemechanism—thatisthecultureofresearch,afterall—butitisthe
prize-givers'moneytodowithastheyplease.Itiswisetotakesuchgiftswithgratitudeandgrace.

thereport'sfailuretoaddressthetruenatureofthecrisisfacingliberaleducationmaycause

identi-fyactionsthatcouldbetakenby"federal,stateandlocalgovernments,universities,
foundations,educa-tors,individualbenefactorsandothers"to"maintainnationalexcellencein
humanitiesandsocialscientif-icscholarshipandeducation."Inresponse,theAmericanAcademy
formedtheCommissionontheHumanitiesandSocialSciences.Amongthecommission's51
membersaretop-tier-universitypresi-dents,scholars,lawyers,judges,andbusinessexecutives,
aswellasprominentfiguresfromdiplomacy,filmmaking,musicandjournalism.
Thegoalsidentifiedinthereportaregenerallyadmirable.Becauserepresentativegovernment
presuppos-esaninformedcitizenry,thereportsupportsfullliteracy;stressesthestudyofhistory
andgovernment,particularlyAmericanhistoryandAmericangovernment;andencouragesthe
useofnewdigit-altechnologies.Toencourageinnovationandcompetition,thereportcallsfor
increasedinvestmentinresearch,thecraftingofcoherentcurriculathatimprovestudents'ability
tosolveproblemsandcommunicateeffectivelyinthe21stcentury,increasedfundingfor
teachersandtheencouragementofscholarstobringtheirlearningtobearonthegreat
challengesoftheday.Thereportalsoadvo-catesgreaterstudyofforeignlanguages,
internationalaffairsandtheexpansionofstudyabroadprograms.
Unfortunate-ly,despite2%yearsinthemaking,"TheHeartoftheMatter"nevergetstothe
heartofthematter:theilliberalnatureofliberaleducationatourleadingcollegesand
universities.Thecommissionig-noresthatforseveraldecadesAmerica'scollegesanduniversities
haveproducedgraduateswhodon'tknowthecontentandcharacterofliberaleducationandare
thusdeprivedofitsbenefits.Sadly,thespiritofinquiryonceathomeoncampushasbeen
replacedbytheuseofthehumanitiesandsocialsciencesasvehiclesforpublicizing
"progressive,"orleft-liberalpropaganda.Today,professorsroutinelytreattheprogressive
interpretationofhistoryandprogressivepublicpolicyasthepropersubjectofstudywhile
portrayingconservativeorclassicalliberalideas—suchasfreemarketsorself-reliance—as
fallingoutsidetheboundariesofroutine,andsometimeslegitimate,intellectualinvestigation.
TheAAASdisplaysgreatenthu-siasmforliberaleducation.Yetitsreportmaywellsetback
reformbyobscuringthedepthandbreadthofthechallengethatCongressaskedittoilluminate.

Inthepastcoupleofweeksaquarrelhasillustratedthevaluetoadvertisersofsuchfine-grained
informa-tion:Shouldadvertisersassumethatpeoplearehappytobetrackedandsent
behaviouralads?Orshouldtheyhaveexplicitpermission?
InDecember2010America'sFederalTradeCommission(FTC)proposedaddinga“donot
track”(DNT)optiontointernetbrowsers,sothatuserscouldtelladvertisersthattheydidnot
wanttobefol-lowed.Microsoft'sInternetExplorerandApple'sSafaribothofferDNT;Google's
Chromeisduetodosothisyear.InFebruarytheFTCandtheDigitalAdvertisingAlliance(DAA)
agreedthattheindustrywouldgetcrackingonrespondingtoDNTrequests.
OnMay31stMicrosoftsetofftherow.ItsaidthatInternetExplorer10,theversiondueto
appearwithwindows8,wouldhaveDNTasadefault.
Advertis-ersarehorrified.Humannaturebeingwhatitis,mostpeoplestickwithdefaultsettings.
FewswitchDNTonnow,butiftrackingisoffitwillstayoff.BobLiodice,thechiefexecutiveof
the
Associa-tionofNationalAdvertisers,saysconsumerswillbeworseoffiftheindustrycannot
collectinforma-tionabouttheirpreferences.Peoplewillnotgetfewerads,hesays."They'llget
lessmeaningful,lesstargetedads.”
Itisnotyetclearhowadvertiserswillrespond.GettingaDNTsignaldoesnotobligeanyoneto
stoptracking,althoughsomecompanieshavepromisedtodoso.Unabletotellwhether
someonereal-lyobjectstobehaviouraladsorwhethertheyarestickingwithMicrosoft'sdefault,
somemayignoreaDNTsignalandpressonanyway.
Al-souncleariswhyMicrosofthasgoneitalone.Afterall,ithasanadbusinesstoo,whichitsays
willcomp-lywithDNTrequests,thoughitisstillworkingouthow.IfitistryingtoupsetGoogle,
whichreliesal-mostwhollyonadvertising,ithaschosenanindirectmethod:Thereisno
guaranteethatDNTbyde-faultwillbecomethenorm.DNTdoesnotseemanobviouslyhuge
sellingpointforwindows8—thoughthefirmhascomparedsomeofitsotherproducts
favourablywithGoogle'sonthatcountbe-fore.BrendonLynch,Microsoft'schiefprivacyofficer,
blogged:Z/Webelieveconsumersshouldhavemorecontrol."Coulditreallybethatsimple?

网时代,至少在理论上,可以大大减少这种浪费。通过观察人们搜索什么、点击什么、在网
上说些什么,公司可以锁定目标,将"行为"广告(即,"有作为的"或"有用的"广告)投放给
最有可能的购买产品的人。
在过去几周,三次交易和一次争论己经向广告商(以及他们的软件提供商)展示了这种经过
精细处理的信息的价值:广告商应该假设人们喜欢被跟踪,并发送行为广告吗?还是他们应
该先得到明确的许可才行?
在2010年12月,美国联邦贸易委员会提出,应该在网络浏览器上添加"拒绝跟踪"(DNT)
选项,这样一来,用户就可以告诉广告商他们不想被追踪。微软公司的IE浏览器和苹果公

现在还不清楚广告商们会怎样采取行动。拒绝跟踪信号并不会强制任何人停止跟踪,尽管有

是真正反对行为广告,还是他们只是没有改动微软的默认设置,有些公司可能会忽视拒绝跟

Butsuchgloominessismisplaced.Thefossilrecordshowsthatmanyspecieshaveenduredfor
millionsofyears—sowhyshouldn'twe?Takeabroaderlookatourspecies'placeinthe
universe,anditbecomesclearthatwehaveanexcellentchanceofsurvivingfortens,ifnot
hundreds,ofthousandsofyears.LookupHomosapiensinthe"RedList'ofthreatenedspeciesof
theInternationalUnionfortheConversationofNature(IUCN),andyouwillread:"ListedasLeast

Sowhatdoesourdeepfuturehold?Agrowingnumberofresearchersandorganisationsarenow
think-ingseriouslyaboutthatquestion.Forexample,theLongNowFoundationhasasitsflagship
projectamechanicalclockthatisdesignedtostillbemarkingtimethousandsofyearshence.
Per-hapswillfully,itmaybeeasiertothinkaboutsuchlengthytimescalesthanaboutthemore
immediatefuture.Thepotentialevolutionoftoday'stechnology,anditssocialconsequences,is
dazzlinglycomplicated,andit'sperhapsbestlefttosciencefictionwritersandfuturologiststo
explorethemanypossibilitieswecanenvisage.That'sonereasonwhywehavelaunchedArc,a
newpublicationdedicatedtothenearfuture.
Buttakealongerviewandthereisasurprisingamountthatwecansaywithconsiderable
assurance.Assooften,thepastholdsthekeytothefuture:wehavenowidentifiedenoughof
thelong-termpatternsshapingthehistoryoftheplanet,andourspecies,tomake
evidence-basedforecastsaboutthesituationsinwhichourdescendantswillfindthemselves.
Thislongperspectivemakesthepessimisticviewofourprospectsseemmorelikelytobea
passingfad.Tobesure,thefutureisnotallrosy.Butwearenowknowledgeableenoughto
re-ducemanyoftherisksthatthreatenedtheexistenceofearlierhumans,andtoimprovethe
lotofthosetocome.
