bothteststwice---oncetwoeardstheendofeachvolunteer'stimeatschool,andthenagain

achoicebetweentheacademic/collegialandvocationalroutes,anditwasonthesethatthe

trainingandajob.

Whenitcametothesecondroundoftests,Dr.Gollefoundthatthepersonalitiesofthose

whohadgonetouniversityhadnotchangedsignificantly/obviously.Thosewhohadundergone

vocationaltrainingandthengotjobswerenotthatmuchchangedinpersonality,either-

exceptinonecrucial/decisiveaspect.Theyhadbecomemoreconscientious.

Thatsoundslikeagoodthing,certainlycomparedwiththecommonpublicimpressionof

undergraduatesasagroupoflazybones.Butchangesinattitudethattheresearchersrecorded

wereratherworrying.Intheuniversitygroup,again,nonewereobservable.Butthosewhohad

chosenthevocationalrouteshowedobviousdropsininterestintasksthatarecuriousand

creativeinnature.Andthatmightblocktheirchoiceofcareers.

Somecuriousandcreativejobs,suchasscientificresearch,are,indeedbeyondthe

degreeless.Butmany,particularlyinGermany,withitstraditionofvocationaltraining,are

not.Theresearchersmention,forexample,computerprogrammersandfinance-sector

workersascareersrequiringthesequalities.IfDr.Golleiscorrect,andchangesinattitude

broughtaboutbytheverytrainingGermanypridesitselfonarenarrowingpeople'schoices,
