husband'sdismay,nothingworked.Whenshesignedupforthestudyand
spentanightatasuburbanBostonsleeplab,shefoundoutwhy.
Afterreviewinghersleeppatternsandoxygenlevels,researcherstoldherthat
hersnoringwasactuallyanindicationofsomethingworse.Shesufferedfrom

worldcouldchoosetoembarkifitdecidedtotackleclimatechange.Heplots
variousstrategiesforreducingGHGsthatwillleadinthenextcenturytothe
stabilizationofatmosphericconcentrationsofCO2at550partspermillion

the''greenhouseeffect"isreal:withouttheheat-trappingeffectofwatervapor,
CO2,methaneandothernaturallyoccurringGHGs,ourplanetwouldbea
lifeless30℃orsocolder.SomeoftheseGHGemissionsarecapturedand
storedby"sinks",suchastheoceans,forestsandagriculturalland,aspartof
nature'scarboncycle.
Wealsoknowthatsincetheindustrialrevolutionbegan,mankind'sactions
havecontributedsignificantlytothatgreenhouseeffect.Atmospheric
concentrationsofGHGshaverisenfromaround280ppmtwocenturiesago
toaround370ppmtoday,thankschieflytomankind'suseoffossilfuelsand,
toalesserdegree,todeforestationandotherland-usechanges.Bothsurface
temperaturesandsealevelshavebeenrisingforsometime.
Therearegoodreasonstothinktemperatureswillcontinuerising.TheIPCC
hasestimatedalikelyrangeforthatincreaseof1.4℃-5.8℃overthenext
century,althoughthelowerendofthatrangeismorelikely.Sincewhat
mattersisnotjusttheabsolutetemperaturelevelbuttherateofchangeaswell,
itmakessensetotrytoslowdowntheincrease.
Theworryisthatarapidriseintemperatureswouldleadtoclimatechanges
