ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassAdigitaldevice,pursuanttopart15oftheFCCRules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferencewhentheequipmentisoperatedinacommercialenvironment.Thisequipmentgenerates,uses,andcanradiateradiofrequencyenergyand,ifnotinstalledandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructionmanual,maycauseharmfulinterferencetoradiocommunications.Operationofthisequipmentinaresidentialareaislikelytocauseharmfulinterferenceinwhichcasetheuserwillberequiredtocorrecttheinterferenceathisownexpense.

TheADAM-4100seriesmodulesarecompact,versatilesensor-to-computerinterfaceunitsdesignedspecificallyforreliableoperationinharshenvironments.Theirbuilt-inmicroprocessors,encasedinruggedindustrialgradeplastic,independentlyprovideintelligentsignalconditioning,analogI/O,digitalI/O,LEDdatadisplayandlocatedmodetoshowtheiraddress.Especially,thelocatedmodeisfriendlydesignforusetoreadmoduleaddressdirectly.

ADAM-4100seriesownaseriesofLEDdisplayontheface.TheyletyoumonitorthestatusandalsoallowreadingtheaddressofADAM-4100.Actually,theyhaveoriginaltwooperatingmode(InitialmodeandNormalmode).Theyalsoownanewmode“addressmode”.ItisfriendlyinterfacetoreadthemodularaddressdirectlythroughtheseLEDs.

Firmwareonlineupdate

ADAM-4100serieshaveafriendlyandconvenientdesignforusertoupdatefirmwareonline.Itcansavealotoftimeandmoneytoupdatefirmwareprocedure.

DualWatchdogTimerInside

AwatchdogtimersupervisoryfunctionwillautomaticallyresettheADAM-4100seriesmodulesifrequired,whichreducestheneedformaintenance.Itincludesthesystemandcommunicationwatchdog.

DualCommunicationProtocolSupport

TosatisfybothcurrentADAMusersandModbususers,theseADAM-4100ModulessupportboththeADAMprotocolandModbus/RTUprotocol.YoucanselectthecommunicationmodeyouwantthroughtheWindowsUtilitySoftware.IfusersapplytheADAMprotocol,theASCIIcommand/responsewillremainthesameasusual.InRTUmode,dataissentastwofour-bit,hexadecimalcharacters,providingforhigherthroughputthaninASCIImodeforthesamebaudrate.TheADAM-4100SeriesisacompleteI/Osolution,featuringModbusNetworkSupport,witharobustandintelligentdesign.Itistheeasiesttouse,andacost-effectivechoiceforyoursystemI/Oneeds.

TheADAM-4100seriesofmodulesusetheEIARS-485communicationprotocol,theindustry’smostwidelyusedbi-directional,balancedtransmissionlinestandard.TheEIARS-485wasspecificallydevelopedforindustrialapplications.

ADAMmodulesmountonanypanel,onprovidedbrackets,onDINrailsormaybestackedtogether.

TheRS-485network,togetherwithscrew-terminalplugconnectors,allowsforsystemexpansion,reconfigurationandrepairwithout

disturbingfieldwiring.

ThischapterprovidesguidelinestowhatisneededtosetupandinstallanADAMnetwork.Aquickhookupschemeisprovidedthatletsyouconfiguremodulesbeforetheyareinstalledinanetwork.

TohelpyouconnectADAMmoduleswithsensorinputs,severalwiringexamplesareprovided.Atlast,youwillfindaprogrammingexampleusingtheADAMcommandsetattheendofthischapter.

Besuretoplanthelayoutandconfigurationofyournetworkcarefullybeforeyoustart.GuidelinesregardinglayoutaregiveninAppendixE:RS-485Network.

2.1SystemRequirementstosetupanADAMnetwork

Thefollowinglistgivesanoverviewofwhatisneededtosetup,installandconfigureanADAMenvironment.

Hostcomputer

AnycomputerorterminalthatcanoutputinASCIIformatovereitherRS-232orRS-485canbeconnectedasthehostcomputer.WhenonlyRS-232isavailable,anADAMRS-232/RS-485ConverterisrequiredtotransformthehostsignalstothecorrectRS-485protocol.The

converteralsoprovidesopto-isolationandtransformer-basedisolationtoprotectyourequipment.

Powersupply

Fortheeaseofuseinindustrialenvironments,theADAMmodulesaredesignedtoacceptindustrystandard+24VDCor+48VDC,unregulatedpower.Operationisguaranteedwhenusinganypowersupplybetween+10and+48VDC.Powerripplesmustbelimitedto5Vpeaktopeakwhilethevoltageinallcasesmustbemaintainedbetween+10and+48VDC.Allpowersupplyspecificationsarereferencedatmodule

InADAMseries,thebaudratecanbeconfiguredfrom1200bpsto115.2Kbps.However,thebaudrateofallmodulesinanRS-485networkmustbethesame.

ADAMIsolatedRS-232/RS485Converter(optional)

WhenthehostcomputerorterminalonlyhasaRS-232port,anADAMIsolatedRS-232/RS-485Converterisrequired.Sincethismoduleisnotaddressablebythehost,thebaudratemustberesetusingaswitch

insidethemodule.Thefactorydefaultsettingis9600baud.

ADAMRepeater(optional)

Whencommunicationlinesexceed4000ft(1200meter)ormorethan32ADAMmodulesareconnected,arepeatershouldbeimplemented.Inanetwork,uptoeightRepeatermodulescanbeconnectedallowingconnectionupto255ADAMmodules.AswiththeConvertermodule,theRepeatermoduleisnotaddressablebythehostandthebaudratemustberesetbychangingtheswitchinsidethemodule.Thefactorydefaultsettingis9600baud.

Beforeplacingamoduleinanexistingnetwork,themoduleshouldbeconfigured.Thoughallmodulesareinitiallyconfiguredatthefactory,itisrecommendedtocheckifthebaudrateissetcorrectlybeforehand.

GroundingProtection

Groundingisoneofthemostimportantissuesforoursystem.JustlikeFrameGroundofthecomputer,thissignaloffersareferencepointoftheelectroniccircuitinsidethecomputer.Ifwewanttocommunicatewiththiscomputer,bothSignalGroundandFrameGroundshouldbe

connectedtomakeareferencepointofeachother’selectroniccircuit.Generallyspeaking,itisnecessarytoinstallanindividualgroundingbarforeachsystem,suchascomputernetworks,powersystems,telecommunicationnetworks,etc.Thoseindividualgroundingbarsnotonlyprovidetheindividualreferencepoint,butalsomaketheearthaground.

ADAM-4100seriesallowchoosingthegroundsetting.Usercanuserightsidegroundscraptoconnect.Followingpictureisillustration.

TheeasiestwaytoconfiguretheADAMmoduleisbyusingtheADAMutilitysoftware.Itisauserfriendlystructuredmenuprogramthatwillguideyouthrougheverystepoftheconfiguration.(SeeAppendixA,

ChangingtheprotocolfromADAMASCIItoModbus

SomeADAM-4100modulessupportbothADAMASCIIandModbusprotocols,andthefactorydefaultsettingofthesemodulesisADAM

ASCIIprotocol.IfyouwouldliketoconfigurethemodulestoModbusprotocol,pleaserefertoAppendixGwhichdescribeshowtochangetheprotocolinADAMutility.

ConfigurationwiththeADAMcommandset

ADAMmodulescanalsobeconfiguredbyissuingdirectcommandsthroughaterminalemulationprogramthatispartoftheADAMutilitysoftware.PleaserefertoChapter4toknowmoredetails.

2.3BaudrateandChecksum

AdammodulescontainEEPROMstostoreconfigurationinformationandcalibrationconstants.TheEEPROMreplacestheconventional

arrayofswitchesandpotsthatareoriginallyusedforspecifyingbaudrate,inputandoutputrange…etc.

Sincethereisnovisualindicationofamodule’sconfigurationstatus,itisimpossibletoknowthebaudrate,addressandothersettingsjustbylookingatit.Itmightnotbepossibletoestablishcommunicationswithamodulewhosebaudrateandaddressareunknown.Toovercomethisproblem,everymodulehasaninputterminallabeledINIT*.BootingthemodulewhileconnectingtheINIT*switchforcestheconfigurationintoaknownstatecalledtheINIT*state.

INIT*statedefaults:

Baudrate:9600

Address:00h

Checksum:disabled

ForcingthemoduleinINIT*statedoesnotchangeanyparametersinthemodule’sEEPROM.WhenthemoduleisintheINIT*state,allconfigurationsettingscanbechanged,andthemodulewillrespondtoallothercommandsnormally.

ChangingBaudrateandChecksum

Baudrateandchecksumsettingshaveseveralthingsincommon:

•Theyshouldbethesameforallmodulesandhostcomputer.

•TheirsettingscanonlybechangedbyputtingamoduleintheINIT*state.

•Changedsettingscanonlytakeeffectafteramoduleisrebooted

Toalterbaudrateorchecksumsettings,youmustperformthefollowingsteps:

•PoweronallcomponentsexcepttheADAMModule.

•PowertheADAMmoduleonwhileturningtheswitchto“initial”asfollowing(SeeFigure2-3).
