TheInternetofThings(IOTasshowninFig.20-1)istheinter-networkingofphysicaldevices,vehicles,buildings,andotheritemsembeddedwithelectronics,software,sensors,actuators,andnetworkconnectivitywhichenabletheseobjectstocollectandexchangedata.In2013theGlobalStandardsInitiativeonInternetofThings(IOT-GSI)definedtheIOTasaglobalinfrastructurefortheinformationsociety,enablingadvancedservicesbyinterconnecting(physicalandvirtual)thingsbasedonexistingandevolvinginteroperableinformationandcommunicationtechnologiesandforthesepurposesa

“thing”is“anobjectofthephysicalworld(physicalthings)ortheinformationworld(virtualthings),whichiscapableofbeingidentifiedandintegratedintocommunicationnetworks”.TheIOTallowsobjectstobesensedorcontrolledremotelyacrossexistingnetworkinfrastructure,creatingopportunitiesformoredirectintegrationofthephysicalworldintocomputer-basedsystems,andresultinginimprovedefficiency,accuracyandeconomicbenefitinadditiontoreducedhumanintervention.

WhenIOTisaugmentedwithsensorsandactuators,thetechnologybecomesaninstanceofthemoregeneralclassofcyber-physicalsystems,whichalsoencompassestechnologiessuchassmartgrids,virtualpowerplants,smarthomes,intelligenttransportationandsmartcities.EachthingisuniquelyidentifiablethroughitsembeddedcomputingsystembutisabletointeroperatewithintheexistingInternetinfrastructure.ExpertsestimatethattheIOTwillconsistofabout30billionobjectsby2020.

Typically,IOTisexpectedtoofferadvancedconnectivityofdevices,systems,andservicesthatgoesbeyondmachine-to-machine(M2M)communicationsandcoversavarietyofprotocols,domains,andapplications.Theinterconnectionoftheseembeddeddevices(includingsmartobjects),isexpectedtousherinautomationinnearlyallfields,whilealsoenablingadvancedapplicationslikeasmartgrid,andexpandingtoareassuchassmartcities.

“Things”,intheIOTsense,canrefertoawidevarietyofdevicessuchasheartmonitoringimplants,biochiptranspondersonfarmanimals,electricclamsincoastalwaters,automobileswithbuilt-insensors,DNAanalysisdevicesforenvironmental/food/pathogenmonitoring,orfieldoperationdevicesthatassistfirefightersinsearchandrescueoperations.Legalscholarssuggestregarding“Things”asan“inextricablemixtureofhardware,software,dataandservice”.

Thesedevicescollectusefuldatawiththehelpofvariousexistingtechnologiesandthenautonomouslyflowthedatabetweenotherdevices.Currentmarketexamplesincludehomeautomation(alsoknownassmarthomedevices)suchasthecontrolandautomationoflighting,heating(likesmartthermostat),ventilation,airconditioning(HVAC)systems,andappliancessuchaswasher/dryers,roboticvacuums,airpurifiers,ovens,orrefrigerators/freezersthatuseWi-Fiforremotemonitoring.
