TheChinesecorporatepresenceisstillsmalloverseas,butitsgrowingfast:AccordingtoMilwardBrown’sBrandZChinaTopl00rankingin20l9,theChineseconsumerandcommercialdroneproducerhadaround80percentofbusinesspresenceoutsideofChina.ThetopfiveChinesebrandsbasedonoverseaspresencewereallfromtechnologyindustry,indicatingtherisingawarenessoftheChinesetechnologybrandsworldwide.GoingGlobal:ChineseFirmsAbroad⑨

IntheUnitedstatesandCanada,Chinesefirmsnowhaveabout3,500investmentprojects,comparedtol,500fiveyearsago,accordingtoanestimatebyMaryvilleUniversityprofessorDengPing.Largestateownedcompaniesjumpedahead;mediumandsmallprivatefirmsarecatchingup.TotalinvestmentintheU.S.isbetween$4billionand$7billion,Pingestimates.InEurope,Chineseacquisitionsacertainyearalonetotaled$563.3million,accordingtoresearchcompanyDealogic.GoingGlobal:ChineseFirmsAbroad⑩

OnewayofmeasuringthegrowthofChinesecompaniesisthroughtheFortuneGlobal500,anannualrankingoftheworldstop500companiesbyrevenue.In2008,only29Chinesecompaniesmadeitontothelist.Thesecompanieshadacombinedrevenueof$l.ltrillion,whichaccountedforjustfivepercentoftherevenuegeneratedbytheworlds500largestcompanies.Bycomparison,l24Chinesecompanieswithacombinedrevenueof$8.3trillionappearedonthelistin2020—representingnearlyaquarterofthe$33.3trillioninrevenuegeneratedbyall500companies.GoingGlobal:ChineseFirmsAbroad⑪

TheemergenceofmoreChinesefirmsontheGlobal500haspushedothercompaniesoffthelist.Japanwashometo64oftheworld’stop500companiesin2008,butthisnumberdroppedto53in2020.Foryears,theU.S.consistentlyproducedthemostcompaniesontheGlobal500.In2020,however,theU.S.fellbehindChinaforthefirsttime,with121U.S.companiesappearingonthelistcomparedtoChina’s124.⑫

Chinesebusinessesarenotjustestablishingofficesandfactoriesoverseas.Theyarealsodevelopingandsellingproductsundertheirownbrands,ratherthansimplysupplyingwesternfirmsinsearchofcheapmanufacturing.GoingGlobal:ChineseFirmsAbroad⑬

ThecompetitionmaymakeitharderforAmericanandEuropeanfirmstomilkearlyprofitsfromproductsbeforereducingpricesandreleasingthemtothemassmarket.Vulnerablesectorsincludehigh-definitionTVs,portableDVDplayers,medicaltechnology,andperhapsevencars,accordingtoPeterWilliamson,aprofessorofinternationalmanagementattheUniversityofCambridgewithextensiveChinaexperience.⑭

AttheDetroitAutoshowinJanuary,onemid-sizedSUVfromChinawithgoodiesincludingaleatherinteriorwaspricedatjust$14,000—lessthanhalfwhatmanycomparablecarscost.GoingGlobal:ChineseFirmsAbroad⑮
