Inthestudy,researchersgathered361collegestudentsandshowedthemthe2007movie,Atonement.Themovieisabouttwoloverswhoareseparated(分别)andfinallydieduringWorldWarII.Beforeandafterthemovie,thestudentswereaskedquestionsmeasuring(衡量)howhappytheywerewiththeirlives.Researchersalsoaskedthembefore,afterandthreetimesduringthemovietomeasurevariousemotions,includingsadness.

Researchersfoundthatthesadderstudentsfeltwhilewatchingthemovie,themorelikelytheyweretothinkaboutrealpeopletheyhadcloserelationshipswithinlife.Thisincreasedtheirhappinessafterwatchingthemovie.

Knobloch-Westerwickexplainedthatnegative(消极的)moodsmakepeoplemorethoughtful.

“Positive(主动的)emotionsshowthateverythingisfine,youdon’thavetoworry,youdon’thavetothinkaboutproblemsinyourlife,”shesaid.“Butnegativeemotions,likesadness,makeyouthinkmorecriticallyaboutyoursituation.Soseeingatragicmoviemaymakeyousad,butthatwillmakeyoutothinkmoreaboutyourowncloserelationshipsandappreciatethemmore.”
