goals,saysPaulFerraro,aneconomistatJohnsHopkinsUniversity.
That'sbecauseeconomicgrowthcanbecorrelatedwithenvironmentaldegradation,
whileprotectingtheenvironmentissometimescorrelatedwithgreaterpoverty.
However,thosecorrelationsdon'tprovecauseandeffect.Theonlypreviousstudy

Indonesiahasthethird-largestareaoftropicalforestintheworldandoneofthe
highestdeforestationrates.
Ferraroanalyzedsatellitedatashowingannualforestlossfrom2008to
2012-includingduringIndonesia'sphase-inoftheantipovertyprogram-in7,468
forestedvillagesacross15provincesandmultipleislands.Theduoseparatedthe
effectsoftheCCTprogramonforestlossfromotherfactors,likeweatherand
macroeconomicchanges,whichwerealsoaffectingforestloss.Withthat,"wesee
thattheprogramisassociatedwitha30percentreductionindeforestation/'Ferraro

That'slikelybecausetheruralpoorareusingthemoneyasmakeshiftinsurance
