Part1.Theanalysisoftheteachingmaterial:

ThetopicofthismoduleisBritishandAmericanEnglish,naturally,thispassagetalksaboutthedifferencesbetweenthem.Itintroducesfourwaysinwhichthetwovarietiesdiffer:vocabulary,grammar,spellingandpronunciation.Itprovideslotsofexamples,fromwhichthestudentswillseethedifferencesbetweenthemdirectly.What’smore,thestudentswillunderstandthatbesidesBritishandAmericanEnglish,therearealsosomeothervarietiesofEnglish,suchasChinglish,whichisbeneficialtostudents’understandingofEnglishculture.

Part2.Theanalysisofthestudents

TheschoolwhichIworkinisanordinaryhighschool.Thestudentsdon’tperformwellinEnglish,especiallyinlisteningandspeaking.However,theycanusesomereadingstrategiessuchasskimming,scanningtounderstandthepassage.AlthoughtheyarenotverygoodatEnglish,theyareeagertolearnit.Aslongastheteachercanmakefullpreparation,theywilldoattractthestudents’attentioninclasses.

Step1.Lead-in(2’)

Iwillusemultimediatoshowavideo,afterwhichIwillraiseaquestion,“What’sthenameofthissong?”Wewillrockyou

Purpose:Thequestionwillleadthestudentstothepassage,whichcanarousestudents’interesttolearnthepassage.

Step2.Fast-reading(6’)

1).First,Iwillplaytherecordofthepassage,afterwhich,IwillaskthemtoreadthepassagequicklyandfindfourwaysinwhichBritishandAmericanEnglisharedifferent.Thefirststudentwhowillgivethecorrectanswerwillgetonepoint.

Purpose:Toenhancestudents’senseofcompetitionandstimulatetheirmotivationtoexplore.

Step3.Careful-reading(17’)

1.Iwilldividethestudentsintosixgroupsandguidethestudentstoreadparagraph1and2carefullyandcompletetheformwhichisaboutdifferencesinvocabulary.(3’)

IwillplayavideoaboutdifferencesofBritishandAmericanEnglishinpronunciation,especiallyvowelǀɔǀ.AndthenIwilldivideallthestudentsintotwogroups:

GroupA:BritishEnglish

GroupB:AmericanEnglish

AndIwillleadthemtoexperiencethedifferencesinpronunciation.Atlast,Iwillguidethesetwogroupstosingthesong“Wewillrockyou”usingbothBritishandAmericanEnglish.

Purpose:Tohighlightthestudents’dominantpositionandimprovetheirabilitytospeakEnglish.Teachingdifficultpointwillbeachievedinthispart.

Step5.Guessinggame(2’)

IwillshowsomeChinglishsentencestothestudents,andthenaskthemtoguesstheirmeanings.

Q:What’smeaningofthissentence?Justguessasquicklyasyoucan.Purpose:Todeepenstudents’understandingofEnglishcultureandhelpthemtoexperiencedifferentvarietiesofEnglish.
